Don’t get me wrong here. I love iOS and the advances we have seen with it since it’s inception. But, there are a few things in iOS platform that have seen little to no development over the years.
Some of the native apps like notes, alarm clock, calendar, mobile Safari browser have seen very little improvement since we first started using it.
Luckily, the App Store has some very nice replacements for those native apps. One such app that hopes to replace your mobile Safari is 360 browser by Digital Poke.
As a Firefox user, 360 browser got my attention when I found out that it has Firefox Sync built into it. But, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it has tons of other features in it to give it a thorough look.
Strap on for the ride. The features in this browser is nothing short of amazing.
Firefox Sync
This is a unique feature in an iPhone browser and one that sold me on using this. With this feature, you can seamlessly sync your Firefox bookmarks, history and tabs to 360.
To sync, just go to Settings and Firefox sync, enter your username/password and sync key. And off you go. One little annoyance is the position of the ok button on entering the credentials. The cancel button should be the one on the left. Not a big deal.
Once synced, you get 4 tabs as Sync options to access your dashboard, tabs, bookmarks and history. Very neat and useful.
360 Arc Navigation
Another cool feature in this app is the arc navigation. You just tap on a search like icon to bring up a disc with many options. You just trace your finger in an arc to see various options.
With a single gesture you can easily
- Zoom text in and out
- Go to home page
- Enable/disable ad block
- Go full screen
- Search for a text on a page
- Clear history
The navigation is very smooth just like everything in iOS but you may be peeking under your finger to see what button is what until you get used to the icons.
When you are in full screen mode, you have a second green search icon. Tapping and holding that brings up another green arc with options to
- open/close tabs
- show tabs
- show url bar
- show search bar
- open plugins
- open bookmarks
- go back/forward
This is powered by prodigy engine and it is incredibly smooth and addictive to use.
Quick Access List
You can set your home page to be a quick access list with 5/10 thumbnails of user visited, bookmarked or most famous list.
Download Manager
Safari totally lacks here and I was relying on jailbreak solutions to manage my web downloads. No more. 360 browser comes with a full featured download manager. Download anything from the web and view it within the browser.
If that’s not enough, the app lets you transfer files between your desktop and iPhone and vice versa. It supports multiple downloads with queuing.
Intelligent Tabs
You can individually set privacy mode and orientation mode for tabs. Just double tap on a tab to open options like refresh all tabs, close all tabs, bookmark all tabs, etc. To open in background or to download a file, just tap and hold a link just like you would in Safari.
Themes
The app comes with a blue and green theme. Plus, there are a few themes available as an in-app purchase albeit a bit pricey. So go ahead and customize the looks of your browser.
Plugins
Following the Firefox model, 360 also works with plugins to extend its functionality. There are already plugins for Instapaper, Firebug lite, track this, Evernote, etc.
Here are few other features worth mentioning
- Bookmark management is easy
- Remember passwords
- Smart search
- Password lock
- Ad block
- Search suggest
- Offline mode
The latest version 2.0.2 of 360 browser brings out
- Firefox Sync Latest Version Support Added
- Added 7 Multi Touch Gestures to customize over 15 features
- Automatic Downloads
- Forced Downloads [ Based on Extensions ]
- Download now tracks Speed and Remaining Time
- File Manager now extracts Zip File
- Added iTunes File Sharing + E-Mail Files
- Forced Mobile Search
- Support for Foreign Language in Search
- Default Browser Orientation now Mimics iPhone Safari
- Major Performance Upgrades
360 browser is an excellent feature filled mobile Safari replacement. It is like having a full featured desktop browser right in your pocket. This would be a great app to see on the iPad as well.
Plus, the app is on sale ($0.99) at 50% off from the normal $1.99.
