Starting Monday June 7th you are going to have a choice of staying with your current unlimited $30/month data plan or switch to the new AT&T data plans.
If you use your AT&T data plan sparsely, you could actually save quite some moolah by switching to a lower cost plan.
If you use less than 250MB, you could save $15/month by switching to DataPlus – $15/month.
If you use less than 2GB, you could save $5/month by switching to DataPro – $25/month.
But, the catch is how do you know what kind of data you have been using in the past and your current usage?
AT&T actually gives you 3 ways to do it.
1. AT&T Wireless website
Login to your AT&T account and look at the lower right corner for a link called “View Past Data Usage”. You can change your billing period and get a nice visualization of your data usage.
If you have multiple iPhones, you can view data usage individually for each phone.
2. AT&T Wireless iPhone App
AT&T Wireless iPhone app has a tab that shows you your data usage for the month.
3. Send a text
You can also get your current data usage by calling *DATA#.
Looking at our usage, it looks like we can drop to DataPlus plan on atleast one phone and keep the other one at unlimited. But, not sure if we can base this based on our usage with the iPhone 3G.
With the 3GS being fast, we tended use it for GPS, streaming music or video over 3G, downloading apps & podcasts more and more in our 3GS than the 3G. Hence the huge difference in data usage between the 2 phones.
So, with the next gen iPhone which is presumably faster or atleast as fast as the 3GS, the data usage could again go up. Also, with the talk of video chat and Skype over 3G already here, we have to think hard before switching to the 250MB plan.
What are your planning to do with your data plan? How much monthly data have you used in the past? We’d like to hear from you.
