Backgrounder extension needs no introduction to seasoned jailbreakers. It enabled multitasking in iPhones and iPod Touches long before it was brought in iOS 4 by Apple.
You might wonder now that iOS 4 supports multitasking why would you need the Backgrounder extension!
As you might have noticed, iOS 4 multitasking has left a few holes. It supports only certain functions of the iPhone to be multitasked for eg. playing music in the background, using GPS, uploading/downloading for certain apps, etc.
Backgrounder jailbreak extension (version svn.r533) enables these additional features
- Option to toggle forcing of fast app switching (iOS 4.0+ only)
- Option to enable/disable fast app switching altogether – disable this to stop memory consuming apps except essential apps like gps/audio/task continuation – freeing up memory – great for iPhone 3G (iOS 4.0+ only)
- iOS 4.0.2 support
I am excited to try out the ability to disable fast app switching for apps I don’t care about even though I am on iPhone 4 with good processing power. I am sure this will be a godsend for folks on 3GS and 3G.
Note: Backgrounder is not an app and is actually an extension. Thanks @ashikase!
