Boxcar is the trusted Push notification client for Tweetie for many iPhone users. Boxcar also supports Push notifications for various social networks such as Facebook and Twitter as well as for email.
It supports a variety of Twitter iPhone apps such as Tweetie 2, Tweetie, Twitterifix, Echofon, Twittelator, Twinkle, SimplyTweet, Twitterena, etc.
Boxcar used to be a paid app. Now that Apple allows In-App purchases for Free apps, the @boxcar developer is experimenting with a new way of selling his app.
Boxcar is now Free and it comes with support for 1 account.
If you wanted support for more accounts, Twitter searches, Twitter trends, etc., then you pay $1.99 for each of those.
Boxcar used to sell for $2.99 with $0.99 In-app purchases for more services. This shift in the pricing model, IMHO, is going to be a big boost as I see many people downloading it now to give it a try. And if the app is as good as the word on the streeet is, it is bound to sell more In-app purchases. And it would be money well spent too as you get to pick the service that matters to you.
I can see this pricing scheme becoming popular with app developers in the coming weeks. Plus, another angle to this is that we could be seeing apps in the future that are Lite/Free at the moment offering expanded levels with in-app purchases even in trials.
Let’s say a game costs $9.99 and there is a free/lite version with 1 level with limited abilities and if it is a $0.99 more to try more levels with more powers, that could be an easy sell than the $9.99 price tag.
So what do you think of free apps with In-App purchase options? Do you think that gives you better chance at looking closely at an app before purchasing it?
I wish the Boxcar developer well as usually it takes one brave soul to set the trend for the rest of us.
