Watch Your iPhone or iPod Touch Netflix on TV

We posted on how to watch Netflix on iPhone before the Netflix iPhone app finally saw the light of the day. And then we hung you out to try by not posting about the Netflix app. Apologies. In our defense we did tweet the news.

However, to make amends we wanted to bring an important news to Netflix iPhone app users. Especially those with iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G.

Netflix has added video out support for iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G. This means you can stream Netflix on your iPhone or iPod Touch, hook it up to your TV and watch it there.

I have been using our Sony Playstation 3 to stream Netflix content to our living room TV. We have a TV in the bathroom that we can now stream Netflix stuff with just our iPhone 4! Isn’t that pure awesomeness? :-p

As some of our readers know, we have a 3 month old son and we have already started to look for iPad apps that are useful for kids. So, I figured I might as well start a page here in our site where I can continuously add cool childrens iPad apps as I come across them.

With so many amazing childrens iPad apps coming out every day this is no way a complete list. We want your suggestion and input to make this list even better. Please bookmark this page and share it with your friends of family who might find this list useful.

HBO Go Brings Tons of HBO Content to iPhone

There used to be just Netflix to stream movies and TV shows to your iPhone. There are now tons of options like the Sony’s Crackle iPhone app.

HBO has just joined the fray with their HBO Go iPhone app.

It’s HBO. Anywhere.

The app itself is free and depending on your HBO subscription through participating television providers, you can access tons of free HBO content through the app.

If you already have a HBO Go account, there seems to be no way to sign in at the moment with the only option being to create a new HBO Go account.

HBO Go requires you to have a HBO subscription with your cable TV provider. So, if you are looking for free TV shows and movies to stream Sony’s Crackle iPhone app takes the cake at the moment.

Sony Offers Free Movie Streaming to iPhone with Crackle App

Think Netflix on your iPhone and iPad. Only free.

Crackle is Sony Pictures Entertainment’s video entertainment network. And Sony has just released their free Crackle iOS app for iPhone and iPad.

Crackle iOS app is definitely worth a download as it comes packed with some really nice free movies and TV shows. So, how does Sony makes all this content free?

The app is ad-supported but most ads seem to be around 15 seconds and are hardly a bother for me.

Watch PBS Shows on iPhone For Free

Ever since I got my first HDTV (a Sanyo 32” CRT) in 2007, I had been hooked on to the PBS’s HD nature shows. They had amazing footages from around the world and had an interesting storyline to go with it.

Earlier last year, I was elated when they announced their iPad app.

Now, PBS iPhone app is available in the App Store as a free download.

With the PBS iPhone app, you can watch current and the most popular shows from PBS for free right on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The app comes with more than 300 videos including full-length features, segments and previews with new content being added daily.

Here is a gist of the content in the app

PBS primetime programs: Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, History Detectives, Masterpiece, Nature, Need to Know, Nova, Secrets of the Dead, and more.
PBS NewsHour segments.
Austin City Limits song performances.
Special clips and full-length episodes from the PBS special CIRCUS.
Original online series, including Nova ScienceNOW’s “Secret Life of Scientists” and “FutureStates” from INDEPENDENT LENS.

PBS app lets you create reminders of your favorite shows in iCal calendar. You can browse through the schedule and check out show timings in your local PBS station.

Once you find your favorite program/video, you can bookmark it as favorites so you can watch it anytime.

I had been to New Year’s eve celebrations at the Times Square in 1999 and 2000. It was wild and awesome at the same time but I am not sure if I am up for the crowds anymore. If you don’t like crowds that’s not where you want to be.

This year, you can watch the celebrations, read about it, check out the show schedules right from your iPhone. How, you might ask?

You can do all that and more with the Times Square’s Official New Year’s Eve Ball iPhone app. That’s a mouthful for an app title isn’t it?

The app also is going to feature a LIVE co-hosted official show featuring A-List musical performances, celebrity appearances, first Times Square Wedding, hourly countdowns and the midnight Ball Drop!

Flixster – The Only Movie App You Need

Movies iPhone apps are plenty in the App Store. But, one thing that sold me on Flixster is it’s Rotten Tomatoes integration.

If you are a movie lover, you probably use or atleast have heard of RottenTomatoes.com. If you haven’t it is a site for movie reviews. The site shows a nice juicy plump tomato if the movie is good and gives a numerical score. If the movie is bad, they should show a rotten tomato but instead they just show a green unripe one.

Anyways, coming back to Flixster iPhone app that is not the only thing great about this app for movie lovers. It has all the features you would expect in a move app. Showtimes, theatres around you showing the film, trailers are nicely done in an easy to read and use interface. It also has a couple of extra features worth a look.

First off, when you go past the tasty screen with popcorn you land in the first tab – Box Office. This right away shows a Featured film and all the movies that are opening this week. Every movie has a rotten tomatoes score right there so you can save your money for good films.

As you scroll down, there is a section called Top Box Office which basically sorts it by Box office collections. Keep going down and you will see the rest of the movies in Theatres.

You can tap on any movie to see a cover art, a Flixster score and rotten tomatoes score. A Flixster score, you might ask? Yes, Flixster has an online community you can join for free and rate movies. And you get to see what percentage of Flixster users liked a particular movie.

Here you can also view the movie trailer, get showtimes for the movie (uses your GPS location to find theatres around you), add your own rating or view photos.

Keep scrolling down to see full movie synopsis, user reviews. You can also connect to your Facebook account to see what your friends say about the movie. Then it lists user reviews from Flixster website.

Next tab is the theatre view. This is useful if you are in particular area and only interested in movies running in those theatres. You get to see the theatre phone number, address, movies and showtimes. It also gives a restaurant listing if you are looking for a place to eat before or after the movie. Actually it uses Yelp’s help to show you that. (takes you to the Yelp app if you don’t have it)

Of if you do this often, don’t forget to tap the * at the right top to set your favorite theatre for easy lookup.

Next tab over is pretty self explanatory – Upcoming movies.

Now, comes the interesting part that not many movie apps have. DVD!

Flixster has a DVD section that lists DVD New releases, coming soon and a search movies section. So, this app comes in handy not just for new movies but any movie.

I find this really useful to order movies through Netflix. Netflix iPhone app is great for streaming but not for browsing movies.

The last My Movies section is very useful for movie buffs. You can basically create a wish list of movies you want to see. Plus, there are a couple of time wasting yet fun items like Movie Quizzes and Top Actors list. I hardly use those or I won’t have time to write reviews like this one.

All in all, Flixster gives you a well rounded experience to look up movie information. IMHO, it is a must have iPhone/iPod Touch app for movie goers. Especially useful if you trust and agree with Rotten Tomatoes ratings – it matches my taste most of the time. I can’t fathom why they Men Who Stare at Goats even a 53%! That’s a $10 i could have not spent.

Get Apple Remote 2.0 Universal App with AppleTV Support

Apple has just updated it’s Remote app to version 2.0 and is now an universal app.

The new app has been updated with Retina Display for iPhone 4 and iPod Touch as well as made universal to work on Apple iPad.

One of the major features I like in this update is the support for shared iTunes libraries and the ability to create and edit playlists in iTunes.

The new features include

Designed for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Optimized for Retina displays and large screen real estate on iPad
Support for Shared Libraries on iTunes and new Apple TV
Bug fixes and compatibility with iTunes 10 and the new Apple TV
Control iTunes to send music to AirPlay enabled speakers.
Control volume on each speaker independently

Apple Remote app is a favorite app of mine and it is great to see Apple add support for iPad and AppleTV.

Your iPhone 4 Will Love Retina Wallpapers HD

iPhone 4 wallpapers can make your iPhone look unique and stand out in the crowd.

With the awesome retina display on iPhone 4 supporting a 640x960px resolution, there have been plenty of cool iPhone wallpapers coming out. They are now dubbed ‘Retina wallpapers’.

Retina Wallpapers HD app contains 1000s and 1000s of Retina wallpapers – in fact 10,000+ Retina wallpapers. It has a great selection of quality wallpapers that great on the iPhone screen.

You can filter the selection and browse through them by categories, color, etc. You can preview the wallpapers in full view or thumbnail view (9 at a time). Once you like a wallpaper just tap the Save button and it will be saved to your Photo Library.

There are new wallpapers added everyday so you won’t have to look elsewhere. Plus, the Popular section does really have a great selection to look through and I love changing my lockscreen and homescreen to some gorgeous wallpapers.

The app also has social integration so you can find the ones you like by email, Twitter or Facebook.

Better yet, have a great wallpaper you love, you can upload it yourself right from the app so others can use it to.

The last thing that is a little unique about this app is that it lets you apply Glow patterns and effects on images. Some of it was pretty off for my taste but if that is something you like, you can have at it.

Netflix Watch Instantly Officially Comes to iPhone [Updated]

Jailbroken iPhone users were already using Netflix iPad app on our iPhones.

Netflix app, previously available only for Apple iPad is now available for iPhone & iPod Touch as well!

Just grab it from the App Store and stream all your Netflix ‘Watch Instantly’ content to your iPhone over 3G or WiFi.

For those unaware, with a Netflix subscription, they offer limited number of movies and TV shows for instant streaming. They just released an official Netflix app for iPhone.

Note for jailbreakers

If you previously followed our note – How to Watch Netflix Instant Movies on iPhone? [Jailbreak] and tweaked the Netflix iPad app to run on your iPhone, the new Netflix iPhone app might fail to install.

I am still looking for a solution and will update this post as soon as I figure it out.

Update: How to Remove Netflix iPad app from iPhone?

Just SSH into your iPhone. Go to Applications folder and delete Netflix.app. Power off and restart your iPhone (reboot option didn’t work for me). Install Netflix from App Store. That’s it!
