So far, we have been able to check in to places. The recent update has added a few nice features.

• Added Map view for Places – you can see your check ins on map.
• Added the ability for Check in for Events that you’re attending
• Added the ability to unfriend from the iPhone
• Improved News feed
• Improved notifications UI

Although these are nice features, the app can still get more attention from the Facebook team. I am sure there are many of you out there who use Facebook mostly from just the app.

Apple has just approved it and this app is available in the US App Store right now.

My reaction to the app – a good start.

When you launch Google+ iPhone app, you will see the following screen. As you can see, it is very simplistic and does only a few things compared to the web interface. You can check out your Google+ stream and post status messages. You can also check-in kind of like Foursquare.

Huddle lets you group chat with friends and gather at once place.

You can upload photos to Google+ from the app. You can view your profile but there is no way to edit or change your profile picture yet.

Circles shows you your contacts and the circles they are in just like a list of contacts. You can switch between People and Circles view. I like the Circles view as it shows thumbnails of contacts. You can tap on each contact to access their profile and send a message or leave a comment in a post.

Google+ iPhone app

For a first version of a Google iPhone app, Google+ passes with flying colors since it hasn’t crashed on me yet and offers the most needed functionality. But, it will be a big hit once it offers killer functionality with Hangout feature in iOS and even Sparks.

There is no sign of a Google+ iPad app yet but we can expect one in the coming months.

We iPhone users though tend to use social networks to share photos that we take on our iPhone. However, the current Google+ mobile interface doesn’t support photo upload yet.

To Google’s credit, they have already submitted a Google+ iOS app to Apple App Store and waiting for approval. That should bring a lot of the Google+ web features like video chat, photo sharing to iPhone or iPad.

Upload iPhone or iPad Photos to Google+

You can however you a workaround to upload photos to Google+ right now. Just follow these simple steps. This based on the fact that Google+ has access to your Picasa (Google’s version of Flickr) web albums.

1. Get a Picasa app like Piconhand (free)
2. Create a new Picasa web album to upload your iPhone or iPad photos (or use an existing one)
3. Upload photos to that Picasa album
4. In your Picasa account, setup sharing for the first time.
5. Now you can go to Google+ to share those photos with your circles

With Facebook’s popularity the usage rate for this upcoming app will dwarf even the awesome milestones achieved by Instagram. Read 5 million users with 26 millions pics a month! But, Instagram is available only on iPhone and no other platform and has no web presence.

Facebook could integrate this photo sharing feature in their Facebook iPhone app as well as on the website making its popularity rocket sky high with high adoption rates.

Having said that, I believe there is still room for Instagram to continue to succeed in this space. If you take me, I am more inclined to post just my personal photos on Facebook. I reserve my photography interest subjects – flowers, clouds, trees, odd objects, etc that I take daily with my iPhone 4 to just Instagram (id: topiphone).

In the same way that people don’t use Facebook to the exclusion of Twitter, or vice versa, I expect Instagram users wouldn’t jump ship if and when this Facebook photo sharing app launches. Like Twitter, Instragram offers a different set of experiences and expectations, maybe precisely because you’re extending beyond your normal social graph.

And I believe I am not the exception but the rule when it comes to using Instagram. What do you think?

Fring is an awesome video chat + IM iPhone app with many awesome features. They offered video calls over 3G way before Skype allowed us to. In fact, Fring used to support Skype and Skype pulled the plug on them.

Fring update 5.0.0.52 brings an awesome new feature to the iPhone – Group video calls!

You can do 4-way video calling from iPhone, iPod Touch and Android.

That’s right. Even Android. This just makes it pretty sweet as FaceTime like video calls aren’t limited to just iOS device ownews. You can now connect with your Android friends as well in a group video call.

Plus, unlike FaceTime you can do video calls over 3G, 4G and WiFi.  (Note: You can FaceTime over 3G if you are jailbroken – with FaceBreak Cydia tweak)

If you haven’t tried Fring yet, it also doubles as a multi-service free IM chat app with support for Gtalk and other services. If you would like to make cheap voice calls to phone numbers you can buy fringOut credit as an in-app purchase.

I have been using it for a while and prefer it over the Facebook on Safari.

Friendly has just updated to version 3.5 and brings some cool bug fixes and new features.

Here’s the full list of changes:

- iPad 2 camera support
- Notifications for birthdays
- Improved Birthday Listing
- Improved Live Feed / News Feed
- Share directly from live feed
- Fixed Chat loading issue
- Fixed missing posts live feed posts

I like the iPad 2 camera support and the chat loading fix. If you have trouble launching Friendly after this update try restarting your iPad.

Disco Messenger is a simple app that lets you create groups from your contacts and send text messages in one shot.

That’s the whole functionality of this app. This is a niche app and it fills that need nicely. The app looks nice and it is very easy to create groups from your contacts.

Once you create a group you can easily send a text to them.

Google has bought Slide and we may hope to see this feature integrated into a future version of Google Voice iPhone app.

If you remember, tomorrow is when Apple is opening their Mac App Store. And ahead of the opening, RazorianFly got hold of a screenshot from within Apple that Tweetie 2 for Mac is coming tomorrow.

This is great news for Tweetie for Mac users. Me included.

When Twitter bought atebits, the company behind Tweetie for iPhone, development for Tweetie Mac slowed down drastically. Twitter renamed the iPhone app to Twitter for iPhone and made it free.

The mac version was still selling for $19.99.

With the leaked screenshot, it appears that Tweetie 2 for Mac will also be made free by Twitter. Plus, it will include native RT support, realtime updating and drag and drop tweets.

Techcrunch just confirmed this story with their own source.
