So, it was a beautiful day yesterday and I went to a park to play volleyball. I left my iPhone 4 inside the dashboard in the car which was parked in a totally shaded cool area.

The battery was at 60+% when I left. When I got back to my car a couple of hours later, the iPhone 4 appeared to be dead. It wouldn’t respond to any key presses. I tried

holding the power button pressed for 10 secs

holding the home and power button for 10 secs

charging the iPhone with a wall charger for an hour (no charging indicator came on)

charging the iPhone with iMac

opening iTunes and holding the power and home button for 10 seconds. iTunes found the iPhone 4 in recovery mode and asked me to restore. I tried it but the restore failed.

How to turn your iPhone 4 back on

At this point, I figured my iPhone 4 was bricked while it was sitting in my car. And I was going to call Apple to get a replacement or get an appointment at the Genius Bar. So, this morning I woke up and pressed the power button and the darn iPhone 4 turns on like nothing ever happened. But, the battery was at 18%. As much as I am happy to have a working iPhone 4, this has left me a bit worried. Looking at Apple’s forum, it seems like I am not the only one who have experienced the ‘My iPhone 4 won’t turn on’ syndrome. There are a lot of reports and people suggesting the things I tried to make it work. There are also reports of Apple replacing the iPhones with this issue. A forum thread had an interesting clue about this problem.

‘It could be the proximity sensor stuck in face mode’.

This actually makes sense as this morning I was told that a friend called and my iPhone rang 4-5 times before going to voicemail although my iPhone appeared dead. If it was turned off, it immediately went to voicemail. So an issue with the proximity sensor is the most plausible reason I could think of, for what I experienced. This would also explain the battery loss from 60+ to 18% overnight on standby – the proximity sensor was working overtime. This is just my best guess. I am going to give mine one more week and if it happens again, I will be taking it back to the Apple Store. Have you experienced a similar issue on your iPhone 4? Share it with us.

Update: (08/16/10) I have found a way to power it back on easily. And lots and lots of readers in the comments are confirming that the following worked for them. So, don’t despair and try this.

Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both.

Just hold the Power button for a few seconds to see the Apple logo.

And doing the following fixed this issue for me for good.

Go to Settings -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. (This will reset your Settings to factory default but will not delete App data or media).

Or as a last ditch effort before taking it to the Apple Store, try restoring your iPhone 4 to factory default by doing a Factory Restore from iTunes. (I didn’t have to do this – remember you will lose all your App settings, game highscores, etc.)

Let us know in the comments if this fix or any other fix suggested by Apple has worked for you.

Update: (09/13/10) Check our most recent post on another reason why your iPhone 4 may not start up and act dead. iPhone 4 won’t turn on – Memory issue?

Update: 03/14/11

It is rather unbelievable how many of you are having this issue! I am bubbling this post up for the following reason.

Ok this has started to happen again frequently in the last month. Almost 3 or 4 times a week. And I seem to have established a pattern. It’s mostly when I place it in a dark area like my pant pockets or in a bag. Or when leaving it in the night stand overnight.

I am really frustrated that such a beautiful piece of hardware is scarred by this proximity sensor issue. I have set up a Genius Bar appintment for tomorrow and will post my findings here.

Update: 03/15/11

I just got back from the Apple Store Genius Bar appointment. Read on to find out what happened there!

Update: 06/08/11

After getting my iPhone 4 replaced at the Apple Store, I can happily declare that I haven’t had this problem in the new iPhone 4. So, if you have been fighting this issue constantly and have access to an Apple Store, I’d suggest try getting it replaced.

iPhone 4 Water Damage

If your issue is iPhone 4 water damage, then you have to read that post instead to figure out how to repair it.

Protect your iPhone 4!

This tip is probably useful for anyone running their own websites. If you are a web publisher, have you ever wondered how you can control the icon when a user adds your website to their home screen?

I just came across a tip (a 2 year old article) and figured I’d share it here should there someone like me unaware of this.

For Webmasters

Just like favicons, Apple looks for a file called apple-touch-icon.png in the web hosts root. As long as that file exists, when a reader adds your website to their iDevice home page, the logo you added there will the App icon.

The screenshots show you the logo I did for ShanKrila.com for iDevices.

You can also do this by adding a LINK element to the head of the HTML document and specify the path of the icon like this

<link rel=”apple-touch-icon” href=”/customIcon.png”/>

For iDevice Users

If you want to control the icon for any webpage you want to save in your home page, you can do it with a little bit of effort. It involves setting a javascript bookmarklet. Since it is hard to enter the whole javascript in your iDevice follow these steps

Add the following bookmarklet to your desktop Safari browser bookmarks
Set touch icon

Sync your iDevice so your Mobile Safari has the bookmarklet

Upload the website icon to anywhere in the web and get the URL

Now in Mobile Safari, launch the site you want to add to home page.

Launch the bookmarklet

Enter the url to the icon you have somewhere in the web (it will look like nothing happened – actually you just set the LINK attribute we described earlier)

Now just add the site to your home page and it should use the icon you saw earlier.

Pretty nifty, eh?

This trick should make your home page look nicer and now websites actually look usage on the iPhone homescreen.

Sometimes after a firmware upgrade, the apps in Categories refuse to appear again. Here is a quick tip from a TiR reader on how to get them back.

If you upgraded a Jailbroken iPhone to 3.0 and are missing icons for apps you put in categories then go to Settings -> General -> Restrictions. Enable Restrictions and then Disable Restrictions and that should bring back your icons for your apps!

We have looked at some sweet apps to send stuff from desktop to your iPhone like PasteFire, myPhoneDesktop, Dropbox, etc.

If you are sending just links to websites to your iPhone most of the time, here is a really simple way to achieve that if you are using the Google Chrome browser.

How to Send Links from Chrome to iPhone?

Install the Chrome to iPhone Chrome extension in Google Chrome

Go to the URL displayed in your browser in Mobile Safari in iPhone

Follow the instructions and add that URL to your iPhone Home Screen with the + button.

Now, come back to Google Chrome and go to the link you want to send.

Click on iPhone icon (with a little blue arrow) in Google Chrome

Now in iPhone, Tap on the Chrome to iPhone icon you added.

That’s it! The page you were looking in your Google Chrome browser will now load in your Mobile Safari browser.

This is a sweet trick! If you have such cool iPhone tips, tweet us at @TopiPhone or contact us in our TiR Facebook page.

I mentioned that I am taking my iPhone 4 into Apple Store tomorrow to get a fix for my iPhone 4 won’t turn on issue.

So, I just wanted to take it in after a backup and update to iOS 4.3 in a non-jailbroken state. However, when iTunes started to update to iOS 4.3, after going through most of the steps at the end it threw the ‘iTunes 1013 error’.

Usually this happens when iTunes can’t verify your device with Apple. Then it clicked.

I had used TinyUmbrella easlier to save my SHSH blobs to Cydia and one of the things it does is to block access to Apple servers. This lets you restore to a lower iOS long after Apple has stopped signing those versions.

In TinyUmbrella, go to Advanced tab and make sure you uncheck “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit” option.

As a double check, make sure you don’t have an entry in hosts file in your computer for gs.apple.com. If you do, comment it out and try the restore process again.

That did the trick for me and I was able to restore successfully.

How to Fix iTunes Error 1013 While Updating to iOS 4.3 - Originally published in Top iPhone Resource on 2011/08/17 (RSS)

According to Apple, iPhone 3G & 3GS are supposed to operated where the temperature is between 32F to 95F (0C to 35C).

Recently, a friend of mine said his iPhone was disabled with a message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it” after leaving his phone in his car for a couple of hours.

Even in Michigan, summer temperatures inside a car can go well beyond Apple’s suggested operating temperature. When this happens, you may experience

The device stops charging

Display dims

Week cellular signal

Temperature warning screen like below

If you see this message, don’t panic. Just move your device to a cooler place, stop using it and resume using only when it has cooled down completely.

Some of the things that make this happen are

Like my friend did, leaving it in a car on a hot day

Leaving it in direct sunlight for an extended amount of time

Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight

So, I am sure you baby your iPhone so much but even with good care we may not think of these situations. So keep this in mind and enjoy your iPhone.

I was just listening to Today in iPhone podcast, which I highly recommend, and came across a listener question and answers to one I have been asked many times as well.

How to prevent iPhone app deletion or how to protect iPhone app from being deleted?

You might have a little one or let your iPhone be used by someone else only to find some apps have been deleted accidentally or intentionally. This sucks as most of the time you might also lose the data associated with the app as well.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, this can be done by one of several ways through jailbreak apps that you can download via Cydia or Rock app.

Lockdown – Go to Settings –> Lockdown app deletion. You won’t be able to delete apps even though they wiggle.

Categories – Any app you put in a Category folder can’t be deleted from the Springboard. You have go to the Categories app to delete the app from the folder or your iPhone.

SpringLocker – Lets you toggle to move your iPhone apps but doesn’t let you delete app as long as you have this turned on via Settings.

Supreme Preferences – If you have Winterboard app installed, this app adds a lot of extra preference options including the one to prevent app deletion.

Locktopus – iOS 4 compatible app available for $2 in Cydia store does pretty much what Lockdown did.

As you can see you can use any one of these jailbreak iPhone apps to prevent accidental app deletion by your kid or anyone playing around with your phone.

if you use Categories a lot, you already have protected your apps unknowingly.

Do you know of more ways to protect app deletion? Sound off in the comments.

Hat tip: to Today in iPhone listeners & Rob who shared this info in the podcast.

With the iCloud, one of the features that was made me say ‘oooh’ was the automatic wireless downloads of stuff we buy from the App Store.

At present, if I bought an app on my iPhone 4, I have re-download it on my iPad 2 or sync it from iTunes on the desktop. Same goes for music or books.

Did you know that Apple has enabled this iCloud feature already in iOS 4.3.3? Yes if you are on iOS 4.3.3, you can start using automatic wireless downloads right now. Here’s how

Go to Settings on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad

Tap open Store

Now, turn on automatic downloads for Music, Apps and/or Books.

You can also choose to enabled downloads over cellular network but be wary if you are on a limited tiered data plan.
