The new PwnageTool jailbreak from the Dev Team can jailbreak only iPhone 3GS with the old bootroom. The later iPhone 3GS models have a new bootrom that can’t be jailbroken with this version of PwnageTool.
You can find out if your iPhone 3GS has the old or new bootrom easily with a tool called iDetector.
iDetector is a real easy to use application to tell wheter or not your iPhone 3GS contains the New Bootrom or the Old bootrom. Simply place your iPhone 3GS into DFU mode and click the button.
