Just a few weeks back, my iPhone 3GS Camera Roll started acting up. When I went to the Photos page, I could see the correct count and even the most recent thumbnail for my Camera Roll.
But when I went into the Camera Roll, it showed no pictures or videos. When I connected my iPhone to my computer, I could see all the pictures in the camera roll. I just couldn’t see the pictures via iPhone Camera Roll!
Obviously, the Camera Roll database had corrupted.
Here is how I fixed it:
- Connected my iPhone to the computer and took a backup of all my pictures.
- Use a iPhone file browser like iFunBox
- Browse to /var/mobile/Media
- Delete the DCIM folder (make sure you have a backup of all pics)
- Take a new picture and open Camera Roll
Voila! I fixed my Camera Roll. Hope this tip helps you too.

You could also use SSH to browse to /var/mobile/Media directory to delete the DCIM directory.
