I have to confess, when it comes to iPhone games, I have a weakness. It would be more accurate to say that when it comes to casual games, I have a weakness for tower defense games. I have tried many TD games on the iPhone, but I want to share one of my favorites today, The Creeps. I know that a lot of people love Plants vs. Zombies, and I am no exception, but The Creeps has a style that makes it easy for a novice to tower defense games, and enough game play and challenges to make it interesting for players with a bit more experience.
The Creeps comes with a great pedigree, featured twice in Best Tower Defense, featured in What’s Hot and What We’re playing. There are four level pack upgrades at $0.99 apiece to expand the depth of the $1.99 game.
The setup for The Creeps is simple, it’s a path driven TD game, meaning there is a set route for the enemies to take and destroying scenery elements and enemies result in money. It is the job of the player to use the various tools (guns, paper stars, boomerangs, flashlights and other weapons) to kill the ghosts aliens and dinosaurs before the get to the bed. If too many enemies reach the bed, you loose the level.
I mentioned the came is easy to get into for a new player. This is possible because The Creeps offers several difficulty levels, and the early maps are a bit more simple to handle. However, I found that as I progressed through the game, I had to start planning how I was going to handle the level, which upgrades were most imperative, and which weapons to spend my money on. There is a great deal more strategy that needs to be applied to The Creeps than some of the other iPhone TD games I have played, and that is the reason I keep it on my phone, and keep coming back.
The Creeps is presented in cartoon-ish graphics without compromising entertainment and game play is suitable for all ages. The game has enough variety of different animation elements to keep you playing it until your batteries drain out.
If you are new to the Tower Defense genre, or a veteran who has not checked this game out yet, I highly recommend you out this on your iPhone. While The Creeps may be my favorite right now, there are plenty of other tower defense games out there, and in some of my future reviews, I will bring them to light.
