Google Voice App & Gmail Web App Updated

Google has been pushing updates on their various products this past week. And we have some good news for iOS users.

Google Voice for iPod Touch and iPad

The official Google Voice iPhone app has received its first update. They have added support for iPod Touch and Apple iPad. This should come as a great news for those device owners.

Obviously, you cannot make cellular voice calls on these 2 devices but it has full support for sending and receiving text messages. But, that’s not all. They have added a new feature called Click2Call. This lets you setup a call between any of your phones and the contact you want to call.

Google Voice app also has the following improvements

    • When you enable Push Notifications, we will automatically disable Text forwarding for you, so you won’t receive multiple notifications.
    • Want some quiet time? You can send all callers straight to voicemail by turning on Do not disturb in the Settings tab.
    • We made it easier for you to place calls from the address book by adding a dedicated Contacts button to the Dialer tab.
    • Sending text messages is now more streamlined since you don’t need to press the OK button anymore
Bonus Tip: Tap and hold messages in your inbox to archive or delete them.

You just need an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 3.1 or later to use the new version of this app.

Gmail Web App Adds 44 Languages

Gmail’s web app has been delightful to use ever since they updated it to have most of the features we are used to in using the actual Gmail desktop version.

However, it has been constrained only to English speaking users. International users can now rejoice as Google has added mobile support for 44 new languages!

It is great to see Google improving usability for iOS users as well.

Are you a stickler for Apple’s mail app or do you like the Gmail web app better? I like the web app better myself. Plus, the Mailroom iPhone app makes it easy to handle multiple Gmail accounts and still use the web interface.
