A friend of mine was looking for a file handler for his new iPhone 4 and was wondering if iFiles is a good app for it. We contacted the developer and he hooked us up with a review copy.
Here are my first impressions with the iFiles iPhone app.
iFiles is like a swiss army knife for iPhone, iPod Touch and Apple iPad. Apple is good at a lot of things but it lacks in file handling in the Mail.app where it is so common to see attachments.
iFiles can perform any of the following functions
- File manager
- Document viewer
- Text editor
- Voice recorder
- Wifi drive
iFiles can integrate with a lot of web services to access files, photos, videos, etc on the cloud. You can access the following services through iFiles
File Handling
You can integrate with files on any of these services and interact and perform any of these actions depending on the context. For eg. you can just swipe left or right over a file to display a popup menu.
if you swipe on a Flickr photo you get options like email, save to photo library, Open in, rotate, delete or set preferences. The app has a built-in photo viewer and you can watch it in a slideshow.
The app comes with default folders like Documents, Music, Movies, etc. and you can create your own, rename it and even assign icons.
You can create new folders, rename, move, copy and delete. The app can even zip and unzip. It has support for iWorks (Pages, numbers, Keynote) ‘08 and ‘09 (with or without Preview), Microsoft Office files. HTML we pages, PDF docs, RTF, plain text, movies (MP4, MPV, MPV, 3GP, M4V), audio files (wav, MP3, CAF, AIF, AIFF, ACC) and image files (JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIF, TIFF, ICO, CUR, XBM).
Any of the files from the app can be sent as email attachments. Plus, within native apps like Mail.app, Safari you get an option ‘Open in iFiles’ to open email attachments and files on the web.
File Sharing
iFiles converts your iPhone into a hard drive and you can share files on your iPhone with others or access it yourself over wifi or even over Bluetooth. You can choose to password protect just wifi access or even the whole app. This makes it very easy to share files with friends or to use it to transfer files, music, photos or videos to your desktop.
Voice Recorder
iFiles also has a voice recorder so you can use it to save it to a folder of your choice and easily transfer to wherever you want it.
PDF Viewer
The app also has a fast PDF viewer that can open even large and password protected files.
The only requirement for iFiles to transfer files is that you should be connected in a wifi network.
The app is an Universal app meaning it will work on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and costs just $2.99.
