Linux Outnumbered by iPad in Surfing the Web

This bit of statistic really tugs my geeky heart a bit. I have been a fan of linux since college and I still use an Ubuntu desktop at work.

Pingdom has just released a graph that shows the different operating systems surfing the web. From the browser data they have collected iPads surfing the web have outnumbered the number of Linux machines.

These market share numbers are from Statcounter and are based on visitor statistics averaged from 3+ million websites. In other words, they represent computers used to access the Web. Mobile phones and other small-screen devices are not included.

This means that the number for iOS represents just the iPad and not iPhones or iPod Touches.

Also this just means that people prefer iPad over Linux desktops and it doesn’t say anything about the Linux OS itself.

Also, this is not only true in the US but also seems to hold water in the UK, Canada, Australia and in the Netherlands.

Here is a graph showing the growth of iPad’s desktop browser share since it’s launch on April 3 2010.

You can see the bump after Christmas. It will be interesting to see how much this changes after this year’s Christmas.

iPad in our blog

So, I was curious to see how many people visit our iPhone blog with their iPads since the launch from our Google Analytics stats. In the whole time between the release of the iPad and now here is the breakdown of visitors

  • Windows 56.65%
  • iPhone 19.17%
  • Mac 15.99%
  • iPod 5.25%
  • iPad 1.78%
  • Linux 0.65%
  • Android 0.25%

And there are some hardy Sony Playstation 3 users browsing with their consoles at 0.02%.

This iPad statistic is only going to keep on increasing if the number of iPads Apple sold in Q1 2011 (4.69 million iPads) is any indication.
