Dev Team mysteriously released the updated versions of redsn0w jailbreak and ultrasn0w carrier unlock last night. If you remember, they updated last week saying they are going to wait until Apple releases firmware 3.1.
I contacted them via Twitter as to why they didn’t post a blog message like they usually do when they release a new jailbreak version.
Finally, they broke their silence and just posted a note and here are the juicy details:
- Redsn0w 0.8 version is iPhone 3GS compatible (plus all other versions as well)
Dev Team decided to release 3GS jailbreak and unlock sooner as another hacker – Geohot released purplera1n – a similar but not so user-friendly jailbreak solution. They both use the same exploit and hence the point of holding the exploit back from Apple became moot.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind with this jailbreak as the threat of Apple closing up these loopholes remain serious. They have removed around 180 commends to cut down entry holes in the latest baseband. As Dev Team points out,
ultrasn0w unlockers — You all must remain particularly vigilent against upgrading your basebands, since doing so will kill the unlock (for most phones, there’s no going backwards in baseband version).
Make sure you completely understand their warnings before you attempt this.
I will be back tonight with a step by step tutorial for those readers interested in a iPhone 3GS jailbreak and unlock tutorial.

Plus, this is the first time Redsn0w has gotten Linux support! That’s great news for all Linux fans out there.
