My iPhone 4 Won’t Turn On

So, it was a beautiful day yesterday and I went to a park to play volleyball. I left my iPhone 4 inside the dashboard in the car which was parked in a totally shaded cool area.

The battery was at 60+% when I left. When I got back to my car a couple of hours later, the iPhone 4 appeared to be dead. It  wouldn’t respond to any key presses. I tried

  • holding the power button pressed for 10 secs
  • holding the home and power button for 10 secs
  • charging the iPhone with a wall charger for an hour (no charging indicator came on)
  • charging the iPhone with iMac
  • opening iTunes and holding the power and home button for 10 seconds. iTunes found the iPhone 4 in recovery mode and asked me to restore. I tried it but the restore failed.

How to turn your iPhone 4 back on

At this point, I figured my iPhone 4 was bricked while it was sitting in my car. And I was going to call Apple to get a replacement or get an appointment at the Genius Bar. So, this morning I woke up and pressed the power button and the darn iPhone 4 turns on like nothing ever happened. But, the battery was at 18%. As much as I am happy to have a working iPhone 4, this has left me a bit worried. Looking at Apple’s forum, it seems like I am not the only one who have experienced the ‘My iPhone 4 won’t turn on’ syndrome. There are a lot of reports and people suggesting the things I tried to make it work. There are also reports of Apple replacing the iPhones with this issue. A forum thread had an interesting clue about this problem.

‘It could be the proximity sensor stuck in face mode’.

This actually makes sense as this morning I was told that a friend called and my iPhone rang 4-5 times before going to voicemail although my iPhone appeared dead. If it was turned off, it immediately went to voicemail. So an issue with the proximity sensor is the most plausible reason I could think of, for what I experienced. This would also explain the battery loss from 60+ to 18% overnight on standby – the proximity sensor was working overtime. This is just my best guess. I am going to give mine one more week and if it happens again, I will be taking it back to the Apple Store. Have you experienced a similar issue on your iPhone 4? Share it with us.

Update: (08/16/10) I have found a way to power it back on easily. And lots and lots of readers in the comments are confirming that the following worked for them. So, don’t despair and try this.

  1. Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both.
  2. Just hold the Power button for a few seconds to see the Apple logo.

And doing the following fixed this issue for me for good.

  • Go to Settings -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. (This will reset your Settings to factory default but will not delete App data or media).
  • Or as a last ditch effort before taking it to the Apple Store, try restoring your iPhone 4 to factory default by doing a Factory Restore from iTunes. (I didn’t have to do this – remember you will lose all your App settings, game highscores, etc.)

Let us know in the comments if this fix or any other fix suggested by Apple has worked for you.

Update: (09/13/10) Check our most recent post on another reason why your iPhone 4 may not start up and act dead. iPhone 4 won’t turn on – Memory issue?

Update: 03/14/11

It is rather unbelievable how many of you are having this issue! I am bubbling this post up for the following reason.

Ok this has started to happen again frequently in the last month. Almost 3 or 4 times a week. And I seem to have established a pattern. It’s mostly when I place it in a dark area like my pant pockets or in a bag. Or when leaving it in the night stand overnight.

I am really frustrated that such a beautiful piece of hardware is scarred by this proximity sensor issue. I have set up a Genius Bar appintment for tomorrow and will post my findings here.

Update: 03/15/11

I just got back from the Apple Store Genius Bar appointment. Read on to find out what happened there!

Update: 06/08/11

After getting my iPhone 4 replaced at the Apple Store, I can happily declare that I haven’t had this problem in the new iPhone 4. So, if you have been fighting this issue constantly and have access to an Apple Store, I’d suggest try getting it replaced.

  • Joe

This just happened to me this evening. I was using it while out to dinner. Everything has worked fine for the last week. I went to check my email on the way home and now the phone won’t turn on.
I’ve tried everything you’ve posted above outside of charging with a Mac since I have a PC. iTunes isn’t finding the phone either.

If it doesn’t turn on tomorrow I’m going to the Apple store.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Subash, thanks for that update. :-) It happened to me 2 more times this long weekend. I just came across a forum posting with similar information from Apple – to try “Settings -> Reset all Settings”. Yea, I love the i4 as well! A lot!

Joe, try Subash’s suggestion if you haven’t already been to the Apple Store. Let us know how you fix this. Thanks!

  • Edders

Same has just happened to me. Holding the power button and the home button for 10-15 seconds as you said above seemed to do the trick.

It’s a little concerning though seeing as the phone is little over a week old.

Happened tonight. I happen to be on a trip and used the iphone to get me to an area I don’t know for dinner. Set it on the bar while I ate and it wouldn’t turn back on. Thanks for leaving me stranded iphone.

  • Brian

This just happened to me this evening as well. I was using it all day and then went to hit some baseballs to my sons. I set the phone on my wallet in the dugout and when I got to the car I tried to turn it on and nothing happened. The phone wouldn’t turn on.

    Fortunately your advice worked:

    1. Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both.
    2. Just hold the Power button for a few seconds to see the Apple logo.

    Worked perfectly. Thanks.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Brian & Edders, thanks for confirming it the power down sequence works for you as well.

I did ‘reset my settings’ as I mentioned in the post and this hasn’t happened in 3 nights. I am hoping this probably fixed it but it’s too short a time to confirm. I’ll update the post in a week or if the ‘won’t turn on’ happens again after the reset.

  • http://nyaze.com Nyaze Vincent

Woke up this morning, checked my email, remember the milk, and a facebook. Got up to wash my face. Came back to my phone lying on the dresser and somebody had swapped it with a brick. Nothing I did could get it working again. Thank God your fix worked or I might have gone postal. I just got this thing a week ago!

  • subash

hi karthik for me after restoring i havent faced the wont turn on issue for more than a week. i hope it is fully fixed and i think the better option is to have the phone covered under the apple care protection plan so that in future i happens may be we can change the device through mail in service or we can take it to the apple store to fix it
i hope u guys enjoy the toy after restoring it
    like me :)

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Nyaze, glad the fix worked for you.

Subash, that’s great! I am usually skeptical about buying any kind of insurance for electronics (usually a huge % of original price) but looking at the issues with the iPhone 4, I might consider getting a SquareTrade warranty which is cheaper than AppleCare.

  • Amar

This just happened to my one week old 32GB I phone 4, I was really worried but then came on here and held the home button and then came the apple logo, about 15 seconds later it was fully working again with 100% charge. Thanks for your help.

  • Mari

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. This same thing happened to me tonight. Came home and googled “my iphone 4 won’t turn on” and found this site. I’m sad that everyone here has had the same issue, but again, thank you for posting. The press and hold for 10-15 worked for me as well. Sad that my phone is only 2 days old. I guess it’s a preemie and not ready to breathe on it’s own yet. lol

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Amar, Mari, thanks for your comments. As I mentioned in the post update, the Settings -> General -> Reset Settings seems to have fixed my this issue for me. It’s been 5 days since it happened. So crossing my fingers.

  • Irshad

Hi, I am having the same problem. I have tried to hold on the power and home for 15 seconds then letting go of both then holding the power for a few seconds. It didn’t work and my iPhone is still on a black screen and won’t turn on.

Can anyone help me with a solution, I’d be grateful.

    Thanks.

  • http://www.socialmediaobsessed.com Jennifer

I experienced the same issue where all of the sudden someone was calling me, and the next thing you know, my iPhone4 was dead. I took to Google and found this post and was encourage to know that I was not alone. Based on the above suggestions, I plugged my iPhone4 back into the power source, and I held down the Home and Power buttons together for 15 seconds. That seemed to do the trick. I wasn’t too panicked, because the same thing used to happen with my 3GS. I’m still hesitant to restore the factory settings though… has anyone done this yet? Did it seem to help?

  • Alan marth

Same happened to me today. Was working fine, I put in my pocket and 5 minutes later it was a brick.

  • FrankK

I agree with Mari — Thanks very much! My iPhone4 locked up this evening, and so I did a quick search for “iphone4 won’t turn on” and found this site.

Holding the Power and Home buttons for 15 seconds resulted in the Apple logo showing up — I didn’t have to then press the Power button afterward.

Now to see if it does it again anytime soon. If so, I’ll do the “Reset Settings” bit.

Again, thanks very much for posting this.

  • co

it happened to me this morning and the 15sec trick fixed it. The only thing different lately is I just added the passcode lock. Could be a coincidence.

  • John

This just happened to me, except I was holding it when it happened. I manually locked it, and then tried to unlock it a few seconds later and I couldn’t get anything to happen. Thanks for the advice, holding the home and power buttons for 10ish seconds and the holding the power button for another few worked.

I don’t like this though. I never had this problem with my old 3Gs in the whole year that I had it. Sounds like this is happening to a lot of people. Apple, if you are listening, fix your stuff.

  • http://? Simon Belfast

Hi same thing just happened to me. Don’t know why, but tried the home and on button together, without reading this and it worked. then decided to see if anyone else had had this problem, iphone is only 4 days old.

  • Alvin

Thank you so much for this, the home and power button did the trick for me, I was using the phone as normal, put it in my pocket to go out, got the phone out 20 minutes later and nothing, it was like the phone had no power. I tried everything but thanks to the tip i’m noow fully working again, not good though as the phone is, a day old!

  • Kelly

So glad that you posted how to fix this issue. I was on my way to work this morning and went to make a call and my phone was dead. I couldn’t figure out was wrong. Your suggestion worked right away. Now if I could just figure out a solution to make my email work properly and get reception everywhere, I would be happy. My phone is only four days old and I am so disappointed with it so far:(

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Kelly, glad it fixed the problem for you right away.

An update on 10 days after Reset: It looks like doing a “Settings -> General -> Reset-> Reset all Settings” have fixed the ‘iPhone 4 won’t turn on’ issue. My iPhone 4 hasn’t gone to a coma since my last reset.

  • Dustan

Same thing just happened to me less than an hour ago. I’ve had my iPhone 4 for a couple of weeks now and I had just replied to a facebook status and the phone went black when I tried to post it. I tried hooking it up to the charger and pressing the power button and nothing happened, so when I got home I googled “my iphone 4 won’t turn on” and found this site. I tried holding the power and home button for 15 seconds and I did get a reaction, but it was a picture of a usb cord under an iTunes icon with an arrow pointing from the usb to the icon. No button presses affected this screen so I pressed and held the home and power buttons again and the iPhone began working again. I went ahead and reset my settings just in case. Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.

  • GP

Had same issue just now but fixed it by reading this post and pressing the on/off and home buttons for 10 secs. First time it happens so I’ll see if things start to work smoothly again, otherwise I’ll post back my experience and also send back to apple for a replacement.

  • LN

Had the same issue. I used to video option to video my gf singing for 4 mins, then I went back and viewed the video. After the video, I turned the phone off. About a 1 min later, I turned in on again and it did not turn on. Pressed on/off/home/volume keys, no responded. I googled and found this site. The iphone4 is working right now. Thank you for the information.

  • Luke S

You, sir, are a lifesaving superstar. Tried your trick; no joy. Tried it again, but the phone suddenly came on within 3 seconds that time. Incidentally, I had about 17% battery to start with, but it still worked. Have reset the settings just in case. For those of you worried about doing that, it’s absolutely fine, takes about 20 seconds.

My only concern is how long til it happens next, when it’s in my pocket and I don’t know and miss an important call…hmm. Ah well, I’m sure Apple will eventually have to come up with a fix for this once it becomes a common problem!

  • Lenucmed

Happened to me this afternoon…full charge, been using the phone off and on…pull the phone out with a black screen and no sign of life…just followed the directions above…hold power and home for 15 seconds and low and behold the apple appears and phone turns on as if nothing ever happened…this makes me nervous.

  • Justin

I am having the same problem as Dustan, but nothing I try will get me past the itunes screen with a usb chord. I have tried everything and am pretty sure my Iphone is effed up..I have tried everything listed on this site and still nothing is happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated since my phone is only about 3 weeks old.

  • R.C.

I just woke up and wanted to check the time on my iPhone because it’s my alarm clock and this happened to me too! I was freaking out a bit, thinking that maybe something happened that I slept through, but I held both the power and home button for 10-15 seconds and everything’s fine…

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Thanks for everyone leaving your feedback on this issue. I can gladly say that after doing a Settings -> Reset (explained in the post), I haven’t had my iPhone 4 go to a coma in 15+ days.

Also, Steve Jobs has promised software fix for other proximity sensor issues with the next iOS update. I am glad I didn’t have to go in to the Apple Store to get mine replaced.

  • Kelly E.

I bought an IPhone 3 weeks before the IPhone 4 was coming out (store never told me) and every 3rd call had so much static I could not hear the person. The phone could basically do everything but allow me to make phone calls. I went back returned the phone, waited 2 weeks for a new phone this time the IPhone4. I’m sorry what a piece of junk. My calls drop any time I touch the antenna area. Now, the phone is powering itself off even if the battery is charged. I used this thread to help me power it back on after trying everything else I could think of. If this product is giving me so many troubles in the honeymoon phase can you imagine what is yet to come. I’m taking this piece of junk back. Kudos to Consumer Reports for their rating on this product.

Same thing happened to me. I’ve had the phone for only 2 weeks and
it’s already having enough issues to make me consider returning it and sticking with my 3g, especially reception issues, I can’t use it in my house more than half the times I try, I always had full bars in here with my 3g. Not to mention calls being put on mute while I’m talking or calls being dropped whenever I switch hands (I’m left handed, it’s a hard habit to break!) even if I hold it with my finger tips on the top and bottom. Anyway….the fix of holding power and home for 15 seconds and then just the power button worked! Yay. When the phone went dead I had just finished a call and I know it had was 80% power, it only dropped about 2% in the 5 hours it wouldn’t turn on. Last night it went blank in the middle of a game but after a few seconds was back to normal, I guess that was my warning.

  • http://jennifergatto.com Jennifer

Oh, I didn’t say it in my last post but, THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! Apple certainly wasn’t offering a fix that worked!! Thank goodness for smart people like you!

  • ari

had the phone for 2 weeks and this is the first time it has done this. But yes, your suggestion worked and it’s back on now. Made me nervous! :-)

  • jeff

Today out of the blue this problem occurred to me. I what the author has mentioned and it worked for me. 15 seconds holding down both power and home button then press the power button. crossing my fingers

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

I am glad this tip is working for everyone who had this issue. Remember, the ‘reset settings’ tip took care of this problem for me good. So, it’s worth giving it a shot. Look at the bottom of the article on how to do what I did.

    Keep your comments coming! :-)

  • Chris

Thanks, I just got this problem and follow your steps and did work !!!!!
Still have a clue about what it make it turn off. Btw my battery is 89% it says.

  • micky

hi, i just exerienced this same problem bout half an hour ago and was very dissapointed since i got it only yesterday!! i think that if this problem happens again i will be ringin apple and tellin them i want it replaced. I dont care if it is working now its not the point. we pay so much money for these phones and we should expect it to be working like a charm, my old sony ericsson that is worth 50 dollars never had a problem. this needs to be fixed!

thanks tho for tellin how to fix it, it worked like a charm.

yeah i brough an iphone 4 had it now 3 weeks went to bed when i woke up in the morning it was dead totally. it wont turn on checked all cables , try to change it off the computer , not a thing , when i went to bed it had 55% change, now its dead, wont turn on

I’ve had this phone for about 3 weeks now, I was using it this morning, worked fine, put it in my pocket and when I took it back out later it was dead. I did what everybody else seems to have done and googled ‘my phone won’t turn on’ and came across this website which has sorted it out by using the power and homescreen button at the same time. But obviously there is an inherent problem with this. Now just waiting for it to happen again – not good Apple !!! Sort it out Mr Jobs and while you’re at it get some new clothes, other than black…. you can certainly afford it !!!

  • Dean

    I got the same problem..

The first Apple Sign I got after holding Home & Power/Lock just hang for 10 minutes.
Tried again it went off, came back on again.
A few minutes later walah! Going again.

But my touch screen isnt working……

Locks & Unlocks, vibrates when switched to Vibrate etc.

    WTF. 8-<

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

I’d try a backup and restore and if all else fails maybe reset it back to factory settings (I know it’s pain). But this is what the Apple Store Genius might also try if you take it in. Let us know how it goes for you.

  • Mary

I’ve had my iPhone for 3 days now and the same thing just happened to me. I turned it on and saw that I had missed a call. Someone asked me a question and when I looked down at the phone again it was off and wouldn’t turn on. Holding the power and home buttons for a long 15 seconds did the trick though.

  • Dee Dee

I left my phone in the glove box in the car for about 30 min. I couldn’t get it to turn back on for hours. Finally tried holding down the power + home button for 30 seconds. Turned on. half the battery is gone now too. NOT happy about this issue!

  • Vickster

I got the phone on release day in uk 24 June, and now today around 2 ish my phone went dead so i thought battery was dead so left it charging and went to turn it on at 8 this evening and nothing, so googled iphone 4 wont turn on and came across the website here and tired the home button and power button trick and it worked,

This is the first time i experienced this my phone was at 100% this morning and when i got it working it was at 92% so wil be kepping an eye on the issue

  • Greg

Wow, I’m 4 for 4 on iphone4 issues. Signal shorting, bluetooth stack, replacement phone, and now the power issue.

Hi, this problem happened to me this evening, im usually straight on the net as soon as i have a problem with anything but didnt think of it this evening, i was angry, but was just on msn and a friend said google the issue of which i did and took me here, the home and power 15 second trick did the job, im so thankfull :) thanks guys

  • Laura Carter

Thank goodness for this post. I had fallen asleep ridiculously early last night and when I woke up my phone was dead (had enough charge when I fell asleep to last through the night). I was mostly confused of how I could have done something to my phone while sleeping!

I had hooked it up to my computer and nothing happened and then tried with the power cord, still nothing. I had tried holding the two buttons a few times, but apparently not long enough. I think it took me holding both buttons the full 15 seconds to see that glorious apple start to glow.

This is alarming! Thanks so much for the post!

  • Jamie

Wow – you just saved me a trip to the apple store. Thank you! This worked!

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

    Awesome! :-)

  • Michael C

my problem seems to be worse still than the posts above!

3 days old, fully charged and left (unplugged) on standby overnight – woke up and battery was dead.

Thought something must have been running that it didnt like so reset all settings, now it wont turn on at all – i get the apple logo, but a little bit of static in the top corners of the screen and never boots up.

Happy to hear any suggestions, but I’m likely to get it replaced asap.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Is your iPhone 4 jailbroken with jailbreakme.com? I see the little static at the top (actually bits of code in small font it seems) as you when mine boots up.

Hate to suggest this, but you could try to connect to iTunes and see if you can do a factory restore. (will lose your current settings)

  • matt

I am having the same problem, however, holding the home button and power button for 15+ seconds did nothing. When attempting to charge the phone it continually attempts to load (apple logo pops up), goes black, and then attempts to load again. I tried to restore it via recovery mode. Once it verifies and attempts to boot in order to start the restore the screen flickers and I receive an error code (2006). I have followed the procedures on apple’s website to fix this error code, but still no luck. Any suggestions?

  • DJ

Same thing happened twice to my 2 weeks old iphone 4. I did nothing and it just wont turn on. Will try the trick if it happens again.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Hi Matt, sorry to hear that. There are a few suggestions here in this Apple thread like deleting the last backup folder. If that didn’t help, this is definitely an issue you can call Apple Support for help or make a Genius appointment at an Apple Store. Good luck!

  • Julie

I have had my phone a week. I just picked it up to use it and it was dead and would not turn on as well. Thank goodness for this site that says to hold down power and home button at same time. It just saved me from loading up 2 kids and pulling a number and waiting lord knows how long. Not the way I wanted to spend my Friday evening!!Thanks You

  • Dom

Wow the 10-15 second hold really works! My girlfriend now thinks I’m a tech god for saving her iphone. Great post.

  • Autumn

Yes my friend went through this it gets overheated and yes I do have an iPhone just don’t leave it out in the heat!! :)

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

DJ, if this trick works also see the note about resetting the settings. That fixed this issue for good for me. Hasn’t happened since.

Julie, really great to hear this little tip helped you out. :-)

  • kayel

today (8/17/2010) i was leaving work, i got in my car and started it up, while sitting there for a few minutes i got on my iphone4 and looked at some websites then i put it down. i drove home about 35 minutes as i was about to leave the car i picked up the phone to check the time. it would not come on.

held the power button, held the home button- nothing. got inside plugged it in to the wall, nothing, so i googled “iphone 4 wont turn on” and ended up here.

held the power/home for 15 seconds and it came on. i did the settings reset as you mentioned just in case. hope it dosnt happen again since i use it as my only alarm clock to get up for work.

  • Skooge

Had the phone for 3 days, couldn’t get it to respond – but tried the 10 second trick, perfect! great advice, thanks

  • James

My phone just died and I have a 400 mile car journey tomorrow – I didn’t fancy doing it with out a phone in case of emergency. Just used your “Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both” Did the trick – Thank you very very much really saved my bacon!

  • MW

I use my phone for business – it is the lifeblood of everything I do. Hooray and thank you so much for this tip. Worked perfectly to sort out the problem. My phone is back and working just fine. Thanks :)

  • Jenna

After 2 days I had the same problem with my phone barely dipping below the 60% mark. I tried all of the power button holding that was recommended and when none of it worked I panicked and shook it while holding the buttons and that did it. SO try shaking the phone while holding the power and home button. I’m contacting apple to get a new one, but at least its on at the moment.

  • Allan Connolly

Great tips thanks, saved myself a long trip to an apple store and got my phone back!

    awesome!

  • Bigindianbear

Thanks so much for the tips. Worked straight away – and did the reset too – although had to reset small things – but as long as my phone doesn’t switch off again then I don’t care! Second time it happened in a week – fingers crossed it’s a permanent fix.
    Cheers!

  • Natalie

Wow, the 2-step trick did it! You can’t imagine how much it helped! Thank you guys for publishing tips like that!

  • GC

Many thanks, great tip saved lots of untold misery.

  • NursingStudent

I plugged it into my computer for a few minutes and held the buttons down for 15 second and released and thankfully my phone started back up. I was about to panic since I use my phone for everything including school. I am becoming more unimpressed with the Iphone 4 now, this is my first Iphone.

  • Maddy

Omg My iphone 4 did the same thing! But your advice worked!!! thanks u so much i was freaking out lol
    dumb iphonesss

  • Florian

Had the exactly same problem. 3 days after buy, couldn’t turn on my iPhone. I know that the battery must be at about 60%.

    Power-Home-Button-Thing also worked for me.

    Thank you so much!!!

    Greets from Switzerland

  • Dean

    Just to update.

My phone was replaced under warranty by Apple as they couldn’t fix it!

    Cheers,

    Dean.

  • james taylor

thanks alot this worked fine only had the phone a day made me have a few doughts about the phone now though.

  • Ram

    Hi,

My iphone4 also had the same issue and the trick worked after trying the next day. But does anyone know if apple is taking care of such issues.

    thanks,
    -ram.

  • Tedd

Hi There, I got the same issue here. I was in Frankston, Melbourne, Australia to visit my girlfriend. I supposed the weather at that time was kinda freezing. I put my iPhone 4 in the pocket. When i was about to use it, I was so shocked that the phone won’t turn on. In fact, I had planned to visit the apple store so as to solve this unusual issue. However, after reading this amazing blog, and tried as being suggested, the phone became normal again. Nevertheless, I was a bit dissapointed by this product if the proximity sensor is the matter of fact. I hope the upcoming iOS 4.0.3/4.1 would have fixed this consideration

  • Breanna

Thank u very much. Holding both for 10 secs. I was so worried. U saved me some stress!!! I hope won’t be a constant thing. I love my phone but these constant issues r going to be a problem.

  • CFB

I left my iphone on the table while I went to go do something for 5 minutes. I came back and it wouldn’t turn on at all. I held down the power button and home button together but apparently not for long enough. I tried holding them both for a really long time, like over 20 seconds and it worked.

  • Robert821

My iphone4 just did this and the trick you have mentioned has worked a treat. I bought my phone when it cam out on the 24th of june in the UK and i am already on my second one after the first one broke. I hope this isnt a sign of things to come!

  • sarah

last night i went to bed with my iphone 4 at 50% battery, and when i woke up it appeared to be switched off. i tried everything to turn it on like:

*holding down the power button for 10 sec
*holding down the home button for 10 sec
*holding down both the home and power button for 10 sec
*charging it with the wall charger
*plugging it into my ipod doc
*plugging it in to my laptop and opened up itunes- but the iphone couldnt be found.

after over an hour of trying everything to turn it on,
i attepmted to get it to work on my laptop.
holding down both the home and power button for 10 sec once itunes was open did the trick.

it turned on with 44% battery left. im still left worried as to why this happened, as i have only had the phone for exactly a week.

this better not be the start of an era with iphone 4′s breaking.

    apple you suck!

  • Brian

    Great!

this worked for getting the phone on again.
” 1. Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both.
    2. Just hold the Power button for a few seconds to see the Apple logo.

I’m a little leery of doing the reset until after backing up and writing down settings.

  • Meshari

My iPhone was in my hand and it was working fine. Couple of minutes later I tried to use it, but it wouldn’t turn on!

Similar to your situation, I tried holding the home button for 10 seconds, and also tried holding the power button for 10 seconds, but neither of them worked.

Your trick of holding both buttons for 15 seconds worked perfectly!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Sharon

    Same problem here, version 4.0.2
It happen to me twice already, really annoying,
    Thank you for the tip…
I think this problem is worse than the reception holding issue…
Apple guys please fix in 4.1!!!!!!!!

  • Math

Same with my iP32GB. I did the ‘Reset all settings’ fix yesterday but I jus experienced the problem today again. Unfortunately it happens very often, like once a day and YES, it is annoying. Next week 4.1 is scheduled – let’s hope the problem will be fixed eventually.

  • Lee

Didnt work for me :( and now I have to drive 1.5 hours to get to an Apple Store with a Genius Bar.

  • http://ventura-county-relocation.com Joe Virnig

Thanks for your site! Got my iphone back working within seconds of reading this article.

  • Burke

Thank you! That may have done the trick!
It’s restoring now…but I’ve lost everything on it. Can’t believe how many problems I’ve had with a brand new iphone…Not good practices, Apple. And stressful as h*ll for (former) consumers/clientele.

  • TrustyBadger

Thank you very much for the tip; pressing and holding both ‘Power’ and ‘Home’ buttons for 10-15 secs did the trick!

  • jenni

thank you so much – i just got finished installing the iphone 4 software update…and next thing i know i cant turn on my damn phone – i was freaking out haha luckily the holding down the power/home button worked…….

  • kain Bean

  • Brenda

Thanks for the tip…I started to panic because I’ve already had my iPhone4 replaced once….thank you!

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

It’s great to see this little tip is helping so many of you out. I just hope the recent iOS 4.1 update fixes this issue. I haven’t updated yet since I want to hold on to my jailbreak. But, if someone can confirm here that will be helpful too.

Cheers and keep the comments rolling! :-)

  • simon

Mine just did this, two weeks old and I upgrgraded to 4.1 yesterday, so it has not been fixed with the latest update. Thanks for the two button trick advice.

  • Singh

Same thing here. Thanks for the tip.

  • ragu

it’s awesome your trick worked out for me too saved lot of time moving to apple support….but do any one thought y do v face this kind of problem???should have a look on technical side….if any one have idea about this share it….

  • TacoTristan

This is happening to me too, my dad and I are going to the Apple store in a couple of hours to see what had happened.
I was at my school watching a football game and the phone was in my pocket the whole time.

  • TacoTristan

    WOW it worked!

  • Julie Greene

Thank you thank you thank you. Have only had the phone for 6 weeks and this happened to me today. Your two button solution did the trick. phew.

  • M

This worked for me, holding down both buttons for about 8 seconds. Thanks!

  • Roxanne

Only had my phone not even a full day and it did this was almost in tears when nothing would work! Read this and followed the instructions which worked! Going to take it back to the store tomorrow though and get it swapped to a new one just incase it isnt a permanent fix! Thanks for the advice!

  • Ethere

Same thing just happened to me tonight. I’ve had the phone for a month, and never had this happen. I’m wondering if that stupid bumper was pushing on the top button the whole time. But, it’s back, and working fine now.

  • Andrew

Thanks – this worked first time after trying all the usual things.

  • James

I just had the exact same problem, for no reason at all. Just tried your solution and it worked straight away! Still don’t understand why it happened but cheers for the help!

  • Kori

This worked for me too – thanks. Anyone know why this happens though? Why the ipone would power off and be “stuck”?

  • http://n/a bj

thanks mate, was really great trick, the 15 second hold those buttons, work perfect.thanks again for information.

  • Sharon

Upgrading to 4.1 won’t fix the problem
WHY IS IT HAPPENING?? is the most important question..
IS APPLE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM?? is an important question also..

Resetting the device is just a temporary cure…

  • Andy

Thank you. The restart trick works perfectly for me.
I only had this problem after I upgraded to 4.1.

Andy, thanks for the heads up. This is the first confirmation I have received that this is still happening in iOS 4.1 Too bad! Try the reset settings trick I wrote about if it happens again. That fixed it for good for me.

  • Soso

Oh my god! Thanks for the trick!!! The 10-15 sec worked!!! My phone as been dead for a couple of hours, with no reason…I spent more than an hour waiting to get the line on the apple phone help line and while waithing I found that forrum…and Bam! My phone now works! :)
    Thank you!

  • Math

No, 4.1 doesn’t fix the problem nor Resetting All Settings. It still happens – Today morning I got pissed off because the phone froze during the night and didn’t wake me up :(
What should we do? Maybe we should scream louder?

  • Math

I suggest reporting the bug on: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html by everyone of us. Maybe we’ll finally get Apple’s official statement on this problem.

  • Michelle

Followed your instructions and my Iphone4 is now working – how frustrating – it made a funny ping noise and off it went and I couldn’t turn it on until I followed your instructions. Thanks

  • ashley

THANK YOU! I’ve only had my phone for 3 weeks and it just died on me like you experienced and wrote about above. I followed your instructions and now it’s working, but I’m wondering if i’m still going to have to go to the Apple store and get a new one?

  • Abi

Nearly had a heart attack when my iphone4 went dead after charging to 100% but then found your page via Google. Holding in the Home and Power buttons simultaneously did the trick (thank God!!)

  • Kyle

  • Math

Hmm, your solution never worked for me. After some time the problem was coming back. I’m starting to think that it would be “memory issue” related to multitasking :( .

  • Chuck

Worked for me. Held both buttons for 10 seconds … then the apple logo lit up. When in doubt, re-boot!

  • miu

    yeah , i still sad now , my i phone 4 won’t open :(

  • James

  • Ash

I was so relieved to see this post on the website! The same thing happened to me(the phone would not turn on). I had to hold down the power button and the home button to make it work.

I am contacting a Apple rep tomorrow.

  • JP

Great advice, phone now working, many thanks, but it says ‘It could be the proximity sensor stuck in face mode’. Does this mean I can’t use the face mode?

  • Belinda

Thanks for the advice. I couldn’t believe my wonderful phone that I’ve raved about just died on me with over 50% battery! It’s turned on again, so I’m doing a restore all settings as suggested.

  • Nancy Carnahan

Same problem as you. Made appointment at iphone store, then read you article and your fix worked for me. Still not sure what I did to the phone to cause it to do that. Thanks for your help.

THIS REALLY WORKS!!! THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Boyfriends iPhone = His phone was constantly vibrating for about an hour but it wouldn’t turn on. So we tried holding the power and home button and it finally turned on.

My phone = I experienced my phone won’t turn on if i just pressed the power button. So I held the power and home button for 10-15 seconds and it was good as new!

  • Christine

Same thing happened with my iPhone twice! The first time I plugged it into the wall and it came on. Then this time I tried all the same things, luckily your suggestion of holding both down then powering up worked. WTF causes this?

  • Mike

My iPhone 4 went into a “Coma” today for no reason. Followed your instructions and it is working fine now. There is no reason that it should be doing this! I’ll keep investigating but it’s working fine now…THANK YOU!

  • Schalk

    Same problem here…
Got the phone on Wednesday… Friday evening I put a screen protector on (made by Cygnett) Friday evening… Saturday the problems started…

Maybe the protector is screwing with the proximity sensor…

  • Schalk

After removing to covers… same problem… trying DFU mode now and restoring all

  • irfan

many thanks to you guys for posting a solution, holding the power and home buttons down for 10-15 seconds worked for me, i am very very grateful.

  • blue123

Had the same problem as everyone else…I nearly exploded into a fit of rage and I just wanted to kill someone at carphone warehouse (not literally),but just followed the instructions posted and it worked. please my Iphone 4 iwas using it but after a while it close and it cant open again i try to put it on charge but nothing happen and before i try to call my mobile from other mobile and it ring on the mobile who call but in my IPhone 4 didnt ring and after i take off my micro sim card away from it and put it again they said the number you have called is maybe out of service or switch off so i dont know what to do so please guys any one try to help me

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Hi Secrete, did you try to follow the instructions here. The first time you were able to hear your phone ring and go to voicemail from the other phone was becuase your iPhone was still on but the proximity sensor issue made it look dead. Not sure what happened after you pulled the sim out.

Please try the steps mentioned in the end of the article and let us know if your phone came back on. It does for most people with this issue.

  • td

Mine went dead this morning, holding down home and power fixed it, thanks so much for the post!

  • kim

Hi, I have same problem last night and search for help. Your method is really works and save my iphone 4 back, thank you very much.

  • Dave B

Just had the same problem. Panicked as I couldn’t get online to see if there were any fixes for this problem. Finally got online and found this article.

    Worked first time! Panic over
Thank you very much for the post.

  • Chris

Way cool info. Held the buttons down as directed and it worked great! Did not do settings reset. I did fallow instructions about memory usage. http://om4.com.au/iphone4-wont-start/ I found 28 apps running. Shut off 22 of them. Will keep no more than 15 running at a time and see if this will keep the phone alive. Thanks!

  • christine

Same thing happened to mine, although had it out in the sun, thanks to your advice i got it back on, thankfully, although was unable to use it for the rest of my hols until i got home to find your advice on line.

  • James Godfrey

    Thanks so much for this.
my iphone alarm went off, i woke up had a shower, came back and it wouldn’t turn on. held the power and home for 10-15 seconds, then the power button and it turned on, it is the itunes with an arrow mode now.

  • http://chrismakridis.com.au Chris

Thanks for the great advice I’m also up and running again. I’ve only had the thing for one week and have become quite attached when to my horror early this morning nothing but a black screen. I also use it heavily for work keeping client details. I wonder if the proximity sensor does have some truth to it as I gave the Maps App a work out yesterday driving all around Melbourne. Thanks again.

  • http://www.themommyinsider.com Alicia

I experienced an iPhone 4 blackout tonight and was very upset.. until I came here and read your solution. I held the power and home buttons down for about 12 seconds and the logo appeared. My heart started beating again. I am going to back up my iPhone right now! Thanks for your great article.. it really saved me tonight.

  • LORDMN

I just upgraded my 3GS to the iPhone 4 about a week ago and dang it, it’s now DEAD! From playing a game with a 96% charge to completely black- what the?? I tried plugging it to a PC, holding the power button, holding both buttons, charging, and nothing!!! I’m soooo pissed. I love my iPhone but damn, they make aesthetically pleasing crappy products! Time to head back to AT&T (or APPLE) but I just might give up my love for APPLE. This is my 11th iPhone is 3 years, ALWAYS breaking down on me within a year.

  • lee

i have the same problem w/ my iphone 4, i just have the thing for 2 days and it just went dead. Thanks to you guys,
by just following your instructions it works again.

  • http://www.slimmingsolutions.co.uk kerry

thanks, very helpful, saved me a trip to the apple store. holding both home and power for 10-15 solved fixed my phone when the staff on the phone to orange couldnt!

  • Omer

I just encountered the same problem and your post resolved my issue. Thank you very much.

  • Brad

I held the power and home button for ten seconds and the apple logo appeared.

  • emily

i freaked out when my iphone4 went dead just like that
    also tried everything,
but followed your instructions (pressing the home and power button same time for 15secs)
then just like magic it turned on right away!!!
I reset settings and so far no problem..Thanks so much for the tip!

  • Felipe

Hey! This has happened to me twice. First time didn’t know what to do, until I found this site.

The process described above works perfectly, it is know as a Hard/Forced Reboot. Always works, in case the thing with the face sensor is the problem.

    Thank you very much!

  • FAhmed

My iPhone 4 with OS4.1 is also having the same problem, your solution do help it to bring it back to life but this thing happens 3-4 times a day which is very annoying. I have done everything RESET & RESTORE still having problem. Do you thing downgrading to OS4.0 might help, if it is a software related issue?

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

FAhmed, sorry to hear about your issues. I had this issue first when I was on iOS 4.0. But then a network reset took care of it. Now, on iOS 4.1, I have seen this issue now 4-5 times in the last month. I agree it is annoying. I am not sure downgrading to 4.0 will fix it but you can at least try. Let us know your experience. It could be helpful to others here.

  • Hoang Hai

Hey! I’ve just had the same problem and your method saves it! Thanks so much!

The thing I’m concerning about most now is whether this’s a frequent problem and is there any problem with my phone! Do you think it’d better to bring the phone to app store to have it checked? I’m thinking of claiming now!

  • Oli

Hey Fahmed, I have the same issue. It happens to me at least once or twice every day. Reset & restore, tried both. Yesterday I went to the apple store to ask if they know what to do with this. The genius said “he never heard” of this kind of problem before. That’s a bit hard to believe, apparently many people have the same issue. I went to Vodafone after that, there the guy was a bit more helpful, he told me to leave the phone there and they’ll fix it in a week. I asked him if other people came back with this problem, he said many.

It’s not easy to go back to 4.0 if your phone was on 4.1 when you bought it. I was thinking to do the same but other people reported having the same issue on 4.0 as well, so I don’t even bother.

I start to think it’s hardware related, not software. I can’t find a pattern in this behaviour, the phone’s crash logs say nothing. I have tried removing those apps from memory that were running in the background, as some people said that helps… Same issue, no luck.
I am going for a replacement as this is extremely annoying, and next time i’ll consider buying something else than an iphone.

  • Andrea

Omg! Statues should be errected in your honour. You saved me from a panic attack and a stroppy trip to the apple store! My whole world was crashing before my eyes! Lol
Omg omg omg ur a star!
    Thank yooouuu

  • Arjen

Same thing happened to me just few minutes ago…i was shouting coz first time happened. whewwww! thank you!

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Oli, I beleive it is a proximity sensor issues and many people believed it would get fixed with an iOS update that was 4.1. But this issue is still happening to me on 4.1 as well. I am just hoping it gets fixed in 4.2 now and it’s not a hardware issue.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Haha.. glad to be of help! :-)

  • lindy

Thank you so much for sharing the trick to turning it back on with us! Mine blacked out this morning before school, and I thought “Oh great! Now, I’m out $850!” (because my dog just died in the morning last week before school as well) ;o
I would give you a hug if I could; *hug* lol

  • Jenny

The reset all settings tricked worked for me for a few days, but then the occasional coma came back. I’m going to get it replaced. Stupid apple – this will be my second time replacing it in one month!

  • Jonathan

I guess I’m joining the club, happened to mine just now, first time I had this issue since I got the phone last month. Hope it will not be frequent. Many thanks!!!

Same thing happened with me too! And I just brought the iphone4 about 3 weeks ago – and it was not an easy decision to spend so much. I was really upset when this happened. Apple should do something to fix this instead of ignoring
it. So many problems are happening which are getting ignored

    1) The antenna problem
    2) The fingernail problem – women with long nails have difficulty using the screen, because just touch is not enough to activate the screen.
    3) And now this problem about the iphone not turning on

I want to thank you for providing this solution online. My phone is working now! Hugs.

But apple should not continue to ignore things like this – they make beautiful products, but nowdays people realise that they are not the only ones who are having a problem (thanks to the internet) and these apparently small issues could lead to a butterfly effect. And you cannot predict what effect such customer dissatisfaction might have.

  • Naoko

Yep, it just happened to me and like everyone else, this tip (hold down home and power) fixed it. I just had in my purse and died. Thank you very much.

  • Gurjeet

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Sonali, you are right on. It is amazing that so many people have this problem and Apple has given no response to this issue yet. We are left hoping again that there might be a software fix for this in iOS 4.2. If anyone is running ios 4.2 beta, please let us know if you see still see this issue.

Hi, I had the same experience, but my iphone was showing an “triangle with exclamation mark sign + phone over-heat + emergency calls only” message before it died… the “emergency calls only” message came in different languages also… I didn’t put the phone to my ear before it died, I don’t think it’s the proximity sensor issue… what do you think? Thanks to Karthik for saving my phone

  • Tyler

hey just confirming holding the power and home down for 10-15 seconds works. I remembered old ipods back in the day when they died COMPLETELY they needed to charge for a bit before they appeared to function or to be even charging as no display or power appeared to be present. So I waited with charger in, but your key combo moved it along instantly.

  • emkay

i freaked to see my iphone 4 dead this morning. i put it in the same place every nite and there was more than 50% batteryh life… but thanks for the tip of pressing both button together for 10-15 sec and it is back on again. i hope it doesnt happen again.

it happened the same to my iPhone. I’m a lil bit worried cus my sister took it and when she returned it to me the battery was dead. so I’m trying to charge it up by any means possible, it appears the low battery advice, then the Apple logo but for some reason it seems to be loading up and nothing happens, after a while it just shut down again.

I tried holding the buttons like you say and nothing changes… its already freaking me out!!…

  • Cyrena Limage

Thankyou for posting this.!!! I’ve been up all night trying to figure this out. My laptop wasn’t with me, and there was no computer i could go to to figure out why my iphone wouldn’t turn on. I was playing farm story, or Tap Zoo… i don’t remember which, but i put it down. and an hour later it wouldn’t turn on. i was so scared. i thought maybe i put it down hard, or maybe the hardware crashed.. every 10 minutes i would try to something to turn it on. the first thing i tried was holding the “hold” button, then plugging it in. and when nothing happened, i was pressing the “Home” button.. nothing worked until i read this and u said to press the “Hold and Home” button at the same time for 10 seconds. I was so happy when it finally turned on. Thankyou so much for posting this! :-)

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Holding both buttons worked for me. Thank you! Normally wouldn’t check the website, was about to just go and buy another phone thinking I had dropped it too many times. Saved me $1000! Cheers.

  • Hendunn

    Hi,

Thanks for posting this fix, it’s saved alot of stress. I had just received a text put my phone down went to pick it up again wihtin 5 minutes and it was dead. Panicked tried everything plugging it in to laptop and wall then i found this fix, and it works. I am concerned though about how many posts like this there are, is this an inherent issue with the Iphone 4? I hope not xx

  • penny

holding both buttons worked for me too! thanks!

  • andi

mine just died, tried everything, then found this site THANK YOU, worked holding both buttons down. Phew!

  • Nicola

Mine has just done the same thing! Glad i looked on this site, thankyou! Y does this happen to iphone 4′s?

  • Swordfish

    Yep, worked for me too.

Not sure why it switched off in the first place. The phone worked perfectly fine, left it the table for an hour or so and then wouldn’t switch on.

Like everyone else here I was really worried that I would have to go to Apple store and get them to replace the phone. However holding the home and power button for 10 to 15 seconds bought the phone back to life.

    Thank you.

  • Sanjeev

    Hi Karthik,
I had just the same problem. The power went off and I cant turn it on… But your technique worked!! Wonder if Apple should do something abt this issue… or at least put it up in their manual…

  • Renier

    Hi,
    This also worked for me….

  • Mukesh

I had the same issue in the morning, tried several things, holding the powers button, holding and pressing home button several times, adjsuting, changing the charger etc etc.
But the technique which worked after reading some answers in this forum was ‘ PRESS THE POWER AND HOME BUTTON FOR 10 SECS’ that worked. This needs to go in iphone’s manual..

  • KY Mama

Phew…haven’t even had my 4G for 30 days and this happened…I was freaking out and mad but your solution of holding down the power and home keys together worked…phew. Think I’m going to call the store tomorrow about this…I’m paying too much money a month on top of the pricey phone for it to have a glitch less than 30 days in. Thanks so much for the advice!!

  • KY Mama

yup…happened to mine tonight and i haven’t even had it for 30 days! his solution worked though

  • Brian Mills

Thanks for the help. I was panicked this afternoon when my phone suddenly “died”. I tried pushing all the buttons but didn’t try both together until reading your report. Thanks again!

  • SOTM

    YEP!!!
The two trick worked!! Thank you

  • M

Thank you for posting!!! Same thing happened to me. My battery was at about 60% though I had been charging it for the past couple of hours while I played Parallel Kingdom and listened to Pandora. I left work headed for the gym and when I got there my iPhone 4 was dead. I got home, tried holding the Home button, tried charging it, tried hooking it up to my desktop iTunes. Nothing worked.

I got online here, read this and held the Power and Home buttons like it states and right at the count of 15 the Apple logo appeared. Only my battery wasn’t at 18%, it was at 81%. WTF? lol Thank you so much for posting. Big help. Everyone else, this does seem to work!

  • ktm

holding both the buttons worked for me too. thanks

  • Muneer

Thanks for the guidelines… worked perfectly for me too.

  • Jeff

Thanks… It really freaks me out. It works well for me too… Thanks again. But i wonder why such problem happened? Or is it another Iphone 4 glitch?

  • kb

phew! was a second away from throwing the damned thing in the trash. I cannot believe the little trick worked, 2 buttons? who would have thunk…

  • Bill

It worked on my iPhone 4. I mean this solution:
    1. Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both.
    2. Just hold the Power button for a few seconds to see the Apple logo.

    Thank you so much.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

    Jeff,

From what I have researched, this seems to be an issue with the proximity sensor – the little thingy that makes the screen go blank when you take the phone to your ear. And sadly, this problem still occurs in mine but cannot figure out why it happens when it happens.

But, this trick works for me every time.

  • Gina Baj

Hold both buttons down and then the home button worked for me. Thanks so much for the advice

  • Suresh

Holding both the Power Switch & Home Button together for atleast 10 to 15 seconds worked for my iPhone 4 too..

  • http://apple apr

Yep, this worked for me too! thanks I was sooooo worried. Now, I’m sooooo happy! : )

  • Ahmad

    Thank you very much
I did push and hold the power botton and home botton together for few seconds and its works.

  • April

Thanks a lot for your sharing!
    1. Hold the Power and Home button together for 10-15 seconds. Let go of both.
    2. Just hold the Power button for a few seconds to see the Apple logo.

    Solution is very good.
I just put my phone on the table and did nothing.
But when I try to make one call, power won’t up.
I feel disappointed and I don’t know how should I do.

Now, My phone power can turn on.
    Thanks again.
