One of the main reasons I have seen people jailbreak their iPhones is to run applications in background. iPhone does not let you run apps you want to run in the background so you can multitask.
Jailbroken iPhone can use an app called Backgrounder to run multiple apps in the background. There are a few ways you can switch between those background apps.
ProSwitcher is a free jailbreak app from Cydia that makes switching between background apps so easy and does so in the most elegant way!
If you have seen a Palm Pre in action, you would have noticed the webOS cards style multitasking. You get a cards-view of all the programs running and you just swipe across to get to the app you want.
ProSwitcher mimics that functionality for iPhone and it works like a charm. I use it in my iPhone 3GS and has been working great without a hitch.
How to install ProSwitcher
- Make sure you have a jailbroken iPhone
- if you don’t have Backgrounder app installed already, go to Cydia and install it
- Install ProSwitcher
- Tap the ProSwitcher icon in Home Screen to launch running apps in card style
ProSwitcher comes with a lot of features and settings you configure. Go to Settings-> PproSwitcher to see a list of settings you can control and customize to your liking.
Here are a few things you configure through the settings menu
- Activation method – Sleep button. Home button or the status bar. I set it to double tapping the status bar
- Become Home Screen – use ProSwitcher as your Home Screen all the time
- Display – control App titles, badges, zoom active card, close button, rounded corners, page dots, SpringBoard card, Swipe to close, number of cards visible, taps to activate
- Theming – Theme icons, option to display/hide dock, dim background and background theme.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone, ProSwitcher is a must have for multitasking in my humble opinion. Another one I am looking forward to that transforms your iPhone experience is the impending Pogoplank update.
