LogMeIn is my favorite way to remote control desktops and laptops for various uses. I run LogMeIn in my desktop so I can get to it from anywhere in the world with just a web browser.
I use LogMeIn to provide PC support my family who are in the other side of the world from me.
This how LogMeIn works:
- Sign up for a free account (or choose a paid professional option)
- Install LogMeIn software on the computer you want to remote control
- Access your computer from anywhere with just a web browser.
You can read my complete LogMeIn review at our tech blog ShanKrila.
Another incredible option with LogMeIn, the reason for this post, is the LogMeIn Ignition iPhone app.
LogMeIn Ignition lets you remote control your PC(s) you configured with your LogMeIn account from your iPhone!
Once installed, LogMeIn ignition prompts you with your LogMeIn username and password. Once you login you will see a list of your computers you have configured.
Once you choose the computer, bam you will be connected to your desktop in all its glory filling your iPhone screen.
I have just been using this app for a few days and here are my first impressions.
It’s interesting the way navigation has been implemented in Ignition app. There is a mouse pointer in the middle of the screen. First, i was trying to move the mouse pointer to click on various areas of the desktop. But when you move your finger the whole screen moves and you get to place the area you want to click where the mouse pointer is and tap on the screen.
It took a bit of getting used to but this is the most optimal way of navigating around the desktop with the small screen real estate in the iPhone.
LogMeIn Ignition totally implements a lot of iPhone navigation controls like pinch to zoom, swipe to move the screen, etc and one of the below screenshots will show you the whole list.
It can work in Portrait or Landscape mode. You get access to various controls in a bar at the bottom of the screen.
LogMeIn Ignition iPhone app is probably not for the casual user as it costs a whopping $29.99.
But, if you are a professional and need access to your home or work desktop wherever you are right from your iPhone, LogMeIn Ignition is well worth the purchase.
If you would like to check out LogMeIn Ignition before you consider buying it, know that LogMeIn ignition is an universal app and it works on the iPad too.
For casual users, there are other VNC based alternatives but that is for another post. The spotlight is on LogMeIn now. Go check it out.
