We have a PS3 media server on our iMac that we use to stream movies. music and pictures to our HDTV in our living room through Sony Playstation 3.
I was just delighted when I found out that I could use the same uPnp/DLNA media server to stream everything on my iMac to iPhone or iPad with this sweet little app called AirPlayer.
AirPlayer by olimsoft is an application for streaming video*, music*, photo* from UPnP/DLNA media servers to your Apple iPhone/iPod/iPad.
If you have a Windows 7 computer, AirPlayer app can directly access media files there.
Once installed, AirPlayer can detect any media server in your local network automatically. You don’t even need to know their iP address/port or anything.

Once you see the media server, just tap it to see the list of content made available through the server. Then you tap on a track to play music or watch a video streamed from your media server. Your iPhone’s capacity just became humongous thanks to this streaming with AirPlayer!

If you would like to connect to your media server from outside your house, you have to add the server manually with the IP address and you probably have to allow your firewall to let you connect from the outside. I haven’t done this yet to preserve a little productivity at work since my commute isn’t as long to justify it. However if anyone shares a tutorial on how to do that, I’d be more than happy to post it here for others.
The Settings mode has a few interesting options to play with. You can turn on support for photo browser and even show photo thumbnails. You get to set the aspect ratio.

There is one important option here that basically converts your iOS device into something like Apple TV. TV Out!
Now, you can stream your media server content to your big screen TV with just your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
If you don’t have a media server setup, don’t worry. It is as easy as installing a piece of software, share a few of the folders that have your music, videos, photos, etc, and be done with it. You can also checkout this forum to seek help.
Media Formats Supported
AirPlayer basically plays any media format you can play with your media server.
- iPhone 3gs, iPhone4, iPod generation 3 32G/64G, iPod 4G and iPad: Any music or video from media server – XVID, AVI, RMVB, MKV, MOV, MP4, M4V, MP3, WMA, OGG, AAC, etc.
- With eailer iPhone/iPod: You can use QuickTime plugin to view limited media formats, MOV, MP4, M4V, MP3, WMA, MP3, AAC.
Media Servers tested working
I have used PS3 Media Server on Mac and TVersity on Windows and they both worked great with AirPlayer.
- Mac OS: MediaLink, TwonkyMediaServer, PS3 media server, Majestic, EyeConnect, Vuze, Playback, iSedora, Orb, TVMOBiLi
- Windows: Windows7, XBMC, TVersity, TwonkyMediaServer, Wild Media Server, Asset UPnP, FreeMi, Serviio, SAMSUNG PC Share Manager, Mezzmo, UIStream, Nero media home media server,TVMOBiLi
- Linux: MediaTomb, FUPPES, uShare, Coherence, TVMOBiLi
- NAS: HP MediaSmart Server[with twonkey media server], Synology DS101, DS106J, DS-207+, Iomega, QNAP, LaCie, thecus 3200,FreeNAS, Buffalo, Western Digital My Book Live, Linksys NAS 2000, NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo, Linksys media hub, D-Link DNS32, Linksys E3000,LG N2A2, eTrayZ
- Phone: Sony Ericsson C905, orb live for iPhone/iPad
The only factor for this to work seamlessly is to keep your media server running all the time. I usually don’t but I have LogMeIn Ignition on my iPhone and iPad and just login with it to start up my media server without leaving my bed. Lazy right?
AirPlayer is an excellent $4.99 you’d spend to get the convenience of accessing all your media from any of your iOS devices expanding its media capacity infinitely.
