ToodleDo a worthy GTD contender for iPhone and iPad

toodledo11 209x300 ToodleDo a worthy GTD contender for iPhone and iPadJust recently we published a review of Appigo’s ToDo, but I just had to throw in another great ToDo list manager that’s out there, Toodledo. I have been using Toodledo on my iPhone for a while, but had not considered writing a review of it until I saw in the afore mentioned review, that To-do supported syncing with Toodledo’s website and online task management system. I thought this was interesting since I was already using their website as an integrated part of their own iPhone and IPad app.

Toodledo, like most iOS-based to-do managers covers the basics, then goes several steps further – and its in these extra features that they get my money, both from the $3.99 app purchase, and also from the $15 a year Pro level account on their website.

Toodledo starts by allowing me to organize my to-do list and notes so that I can be more productive. It can be used as a standalone application, or seamlessly synchronize it with Toodledo.com, so you will always have access to your important tasks. The iOS app makes it easy to quickly add an item to your schedule, providing you the flexibility of assigning contexts, due dates, deadline times, setting a priority, organizing as part of folders or goals, and in the case of Pro users, use Toodledo as an entry-level project management system by making use of the subtask feature.

toodledo21 209x300 ToodleDo a worthy GTD contender for iPhone and iPadToodledo is flexible enough to work with many different styles of list management. You can use the popular GTD methodology, or you can use your own system. You can keep things simple, or you can add as much complexity as you need. You can add free-form notes to your tasks, which I have found to be a great asset when working on client projects, or when making a sales call.

Toodledo has a Notebook section, perfect for taking non-task related notes as a quick way to jot down ideas or information, and it all gets synced with their website.

The Toodledo service can be set up to share a live link to your Google calendar. I use this to automatically schedule, and block out time in my day for getting things done. Any time I add a to-do with a due-date, it gets added to a specific Google calendar, that I can have synced across all my devices.

As far as the app goes, Toodledo is easy to use, and very intuitively put together. I have not experienced any stability issues, and syncing between phone and web has been seamless.

Having access to all of it, and being able to focus on the tasks that I can do where I am at the time is extremely important.

While there are other to-do apps out there, some of them less expensive than the $3.99, in my use, none of the provide the complete user experience that Toodledo delivers on both the iPhone and iPad.

Great review Lee! I have started using Pocket Informant (PI) for iPhone for my new found GTD interest. But, I didn’t find using my iPhone all day to input all my stuff. When I saw your post on ToodleDo, a bulb went off as I had seen a switch to Sync with Pocket Informant in the app settings.

I created a ToodleDo account and uploaded all my PI data into ToodleDo and Voila!

Now, I have a web interface to this great app. Not sure if I will switch to the ToodleDo iPhone app yet but thanks for the review!

Yeah, the web interface is my main gateway for me. Its not the prettiest site in the world, but I will take function over form just about any day. The iPhone app is a great window into my to do list, and since it has all the functionality of the site, it works well for updating and adding on the go.

Another feature I did not write about is you can set up the website to add tasks from emails. Just one more way to make sure you have everything written down.

I can’t work out how to sync from my iphone version of toodledo to the web version, or to my ipad and can’t see where on the toodledo site it explains how to do this or where to get help from. Can you give me some pointers?

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Jane, I’d think for an app like this just logging in with your ToodleDo account will keep your web, iPhone & iPad in sync.

I don’t have the iPhone or iPad app to confirm this. I will let Lee comment on this.

  • http://elcinnovations.com smartpig

    Jane,

Karthik is correct, create an account on toodledo.com (free for the basic version) first. Then open toodledo on your iPhone/iPad, and go to the settings tab, found at the bottom of the app. There is a line for Synchronization, and in that area, you can set your account log-in, as well as change the sync settings.

Let me know if you need more help, I would be happy to assist.

    Nicely written review Lee.

I used to be a GTD fan and tried several GTD apps. But I’ve recently been converted to a different model after trying LifeTopix – http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lifetopix/id399076264?mt=8. I’ve found it really makes a huge difference in my productivity.

The key difference for me is that so many of my tasks and todos relate to other things I need to track (like events I’m attending/planning, my health-related stuff, etc.). This gives me all that stuff together in one app and ties it all together seamlessly with full integration to my Contacts and Calendar. Plus, it’s a universal app so I’ve got it on my iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. It’s a steal for the price.

  • http://www.topiphoneresource.info karthik

Thanks for the headsup, Jason. We will give it a try and maybe post a review.
