Tweetaholic – New Twitter App On the Block

There are a plenty of of fishes in the Twitter iPhone apps sea. So, how do you stand out from the rest of them?

You design an app like Tweetaholic.

Tweetaholic is a new feature-rich Twitter iPhone app with a new take on how you use a Twitter iPhone app.

If you have used the jailbreak iPhone UI – PogoPlank, you will be already familiar with Tweetaholic UI. For those who haven’t used it, Tweetaholic’s start screen features half a wheel which you can spin to get to different tabs.

It offers a refreshing take on the Twitter interface with a carousel navigation. Tweetaholic comes with some notable features and here is a quick list

  • Carousel Navigation – every other Twitter client offers tabs-at-the-bottom navigation.
  • Main Menu is the carousel – Timeline, Replies, Direct Messages, Search, Settings, Lists are all available here.
  • Now Playing – If you have a song playing in the iPod app, you can tweet that with the song & artist name.
  • Facebook integration – this is huge if you are active on both and hate posting with different apps. Repost any tweet or link just as you would from Facebook website.
  • Blacklisting – blacklist words or users. Very nice to hide annoying tweets.

Plus, the app is also packed with the usual features you will find in auto tweet shortening, location awareness, 3rd party service integration like InstaPaper, Twitlonger, Twitter Lists, etc.

I like that you can see the number of followers and friends for a person right in the single tweet screen.

So, those are the positives about the app.

Some of these gripes I have about the app may not apply to everyone.

I use multiple Twitter accounts so the ability to switch accounts easily is a biggie for me. And this is available only by hitting the carousal. Also, I have gotten used to changing accounts while replying, writing or retweeting. I can’t do that in Tweetaholic without going back to the carousal and switching accounts.

There is no inline search in the timeline.

Other than that and a few other omissions I might have missed, Tweetaholic definitely makes it mark in this already crowded space.

Plus, it is going against the newly released official Twitter for iPhone free iPhone app. (used to be Tweetie 2 and sold for $2.99)

At the end of the day, if you are tired of the traditional UI in your iPhone and want something refreshing, Tweetaholic is worth the $0.99 it costs.

Rating: 3.5 out 5 stars
