It looks like the rumors surrounding Verizon’s unlimited 3G data plan are coming true.
According to AllThingsD, unlimited data plans at Verizon Wireless is going the way of dodo. Verizon plans to introduce tiered data plan like AT&T for smartphone users.
Brenda Raney, a spokewoman for Verizon told AllThingsD “We will move to a more usage based model in July,” Raney said in an e-mail. “We’ll share more later.”
Droid Life site reports that the new tiered Verizon data plans will start at $30/mo for 2GB of data to $80/mo for 10GB of data with tethering thrown in for an additional $20/mo.
This rollout is said to happen starting July 7 although there is no official word from Verizon.
When the Verizon iPhone 4 came out, a lot of people opted for it because of the attractive $30 unlimited data plan which wasn’t available with AT&T at that time. However, even then Verizon maintained that the unlimited data plan was to be available only for a limited time.
Mobile data usage is at an all time high and carriers are reacting to it.
I am still in the AT&T’s grandfathered unlimited plan and if it weren’t for it I would have to pay serious overage charges or change my iPhone 4 usage to try to use WiFi more.
It is unclear at the moment if Verizon plans to grandfather the iPhone 4 users who signed up for the unlimited data plan or be nice like AT&T and let them continue as long as they are a Verizon customer.
However, the unlimited plans can still be bought from Verizon Wireless now. But, who’s to say how long it will last?
With the iPhone 5 release date looming closer, Verizon is poised to make the new untiered plan the norm for new iPhone users.
