Verizon was going wave goodbye to the unlimited $30 data plan for iPhone users this summer. They announced that during the Verizon iPhone 4 launch.
AT&T has let folks on unlimited data plan before the iPhone 4 launch ‘grandfathered’ into the same $30 unlimited plan.
However, Verizon is now trying to make this switch to the tiered data plan not so painful by announcing family mega-plans for heavy data users. With this new plan, you will be able to share your data with your family member just like you share voice minutes.
Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo mentioned this at the Reuters Technology Summit:
Verizon Wireless plans to kick off pricing changes this summer by eliminating smartphone plans that allow unlimited Web access for a flat fee. It will replace them with tiered pricing that forces heavy data users to pay more for mobile data. After this change the company will look to soften the blow by offering more options such as family plans for data services.
People are going to share that mega-plan based on the number of devices within their family. That’s just a logical progression.
If you are a heavy data user like myself, what do you think of this upcoming change? I might stick with AT&T as long as I can just for the unlimited plan I am on.
