Viber is a fantastic ‘true voip iPhone app’.
When I say true VOIP, this is what I mean.
Skype is a voip iPhone app that lets you call other Skype users for free. It uses your data plan and does not add to your minutes. However, Skype calls to real phone numbers will cost you money. Not free.
Google Voice is great but it still uses your cell phone minutes to make a phone call.
Viber is truly free as it lets you make free phone calls using your data plan and does not count towards your cell phone minutes.
How it works
Start using Viber instead of the iPhone phone app. When you call a number, Viber sees if the contact has Viber installed. If they do, Viber routes the call through either your 3G connection or WiFi and does not add to your minutes.
Viber also automatically adds a purple notification in your contact list so you can easily see. If you want to see just friends with Viber installed, tap the Viber option at top left in the contacts tab.
This eliminates the need to add to buddies. You can still invite friends from the Settings tab.
Free international calls
For iPhone owners in the US on AT&T’s network, calls to other AT&T users are free anyways. But, Viber is still useful to those who make internationall calls. With Viber installed on 2 iPhones in 2 ends of the world, the calls are still FREE! Now, that is just pure awesomeness.
