If there was an inkling of doubt about the announcement of a 4th gen iPhone (4G/HD) by Steve Jobs on June 7 at the WWDC, it is gone now.
Walmart has cut the price on the iPhone 3GS to $97 with 2-year contract. This is 50% off of the current rate the iPhone 3GS is selling elsewhere.
Walmart’s price cut on iPhone 3GS most likely signals the arrival of the newer model. This is no surprise as that’s what happened to iPhone 3G when the iPhone 3GS was announced.
But what is still unknown is if the next gen iPhone will support the still-in-infancy next generation high speed wireless networks like 4G from Sprint and LTE 4G from AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
With 4G service being non-existent to most customers across the US, would Steve Jobs release a 4G capable phone now or hold off until it becomes widely available next year?
If I were asked to make a guess, I’d say the next gen iPhone will be called iPhone HD and will feature a superior screen resolution and the faster 1GHz A9 processor but not have 4G capability.
Should I Get the 3GS now?
I would say, no. Just wait until June 7th to see the announcements. The $97 (or $99) price is probably going to become de-facto for the iPhone 3GS everywhere.
You could evaluate what more do you get by paying the extra $100 for the 4th gen iPhone assuming the new prices are again $199 and $299.
